Asian Automakers Dominate in Consumer Reports Reliability Survey

Tesla, Cadillac suffer from some serious problems.

The 2017 Kia Niro received favorable reviews from owners in the latest Consumer Reports reliability study.

Asian automakers once again topped the annual Consumer Reports Automotive Reliability Survey, though there were some notable exceptions in the study which looked at the problems owners have experienced with their 2017 model-year cars, trucks and crossovers.

Toyota and Lexus, perennial charter-toppers, repeated as the most reliable brands, according to Consumer Reports, or CR, which tallied owner surveys covering about 640,000 vehicles from the 2017 model-year. But Kia, a brand long dismissed for questionable quality, came in third, a surge reflected by several other recent studies.

At the other end of the spectrum was Cadillac, ranked the least reliable brand in the annual study by the influential non-profit publication. Cadillac’s big Escalade SUV, meanwhile, tied as the single worst vehicle, in terms of reliability. The other model at the bottom was the much-troubled Tesla Model X. (more…)

Fiat Tops List of Most Unreliable Auto Brands

Fiat 500L rates least reliable new car by Consumer Reports.

The Fiat 500L was rated the most unreliable car by Consumer Reports based on reader feedback.

Consumer Reports often offers up plenty of controversial insights about new cars and its most recent list of the 20 least reliable vehicles for 2015 has at least one surprise on the list.

The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class made the list due to problems with electronics, steering and drive systems. The normally rock-solid reliability of the German brand was not as it normally is with the new entry-level Benz.

Mercedes actually had two entries – the GL Class too – on the list, but it wasn’t alone in the luxury segment as the Infiniti QX60 and Cadillac ATS also founds spots. (more…)

Tesla Takes Consumer Reports Top Spot – Again

Magazine names Model S “Best Overall” for second year in a row.

Tesla's Model S took the title of Best Overall vehicle in Consumer Reports' latest ratings.

For the second year in a row, the Tesla Model S captured Consumer Reports best overall vehicle award by scoring 99 out of 100 points in the magazine’s annual review of vehicles.

Tesla’s top-of-the-line electric vehicle, which was named the best model for 2014 too, couldn’t be overtaken by any of the new entries.

“For all of the impressive new vehicles released in 2014, none was able to eclipse the innovation, magnificence and sheer technological arrogance of the Tesla,” according to the magazine. “That’s why it’s our best overall pick for the second consecutive year.” (more…)
