Consumer Reports Name Top Brands and Models

Japanese makers dominate again.

by on Feb.24, 2015

The Toyota Highlander was one of the top-ranked models according to Consumer Reports readers.

Consumer Reports’ latest list of top-ranked automotive brands and models contained some big surprises and reinforced some long-standing reputations. Notably, little battery-car start-up Tesla Motors had the top-ranked product overall in the form of its Model S sedan.

Toyota, a manufacturer long associated with high-quality products, managed to place two of its brands in the Top Ten, meanwhile. But Kia, a marque may traditionally associated with lowball pricing, also managed to place among the industry’s best, nudging aside BMW to take the ninth place spot in Consumer Reports’ annual automotive brands report card.

Nissan Hires Consumer Reports’ Top Auto Tester

Resume gets “Recommended” rating from #2 Japanese maker.

by on Aug.23, 2012

Former Consumer Reports chief auto tester David Champion returns to Nissan.

There’s little doubt automakers take Consumer Reports magazine quite seriously.  Seriously enough, in fact, that Nissan has hired David Champion, the non-profit organization’s top automotive tester.

In his newly created post as executive advisor for competitive assessment and quality, the 57-year-old Champion should be able to assist the Japanese maker in getting a better handle on both what consumers like and what they’re likely to complain about.

“David Champion’s unique industry background will help ensure that the customer’s voice is evident in every product we engineer,” said Carla Bailo, Nissan’s senior vice president, research and development, whom Champion will now work with.

Subaru Tops Honda in New Consumer Reports Study

Japan still tops "Automotive Report Card," but lead shrinking.

by on Feb.28, 2012

The 2012 Impreza helped position as the new leader in the Consumer Reports Automotive Report Card.

In another setback for longtime Japanese quality leader Honda, it has been knocked out of the top spot according to the annual Consumer Reports Automotive Report Card by up-start Subaru.  Honda had topped the study for the last four years but has taken sharp criticism, of late, for a variety of problems, notably with the latest version of its long-popular Civic model.

Tackling the News!

Subaru, the maker of all-wheel-drive products like the Outback and Forester also topped industry giant Toyota in the yearly measure of performance, comfort, utility and reliability.

Japanese makers retained their lead, overall, in the annual automotive study.  But, “While Japanese automakers still hold the top five spots, their lead is shrinking. In some of Honda’s and Toyota’s recently redesigned models, cost-cutting has become more noticeable,” said David Champion, senior director of the Consumer Reports Automotive Test Center.
