Value of Deal with Man United Getting Early Test

$559 million tie-up got marketing chief fired.

by on Apr.15, 2014

Manchester United's Phil Townsend (left) and Chevrolet U.S. Marketing Vice President Paul Edwards announce Chevrolet's sponsorship of Manchester United's match vs. Real Madrid at the University of Michigan on Aug. 2.

One of General Motors’ most controversial marketing endeavors will be on full display as the Manchester United Football Club will barnstorm in the U.S. this summer, wearing their new jerseys, featuring the Chevrolet brand logo in distinctive colors.

With 60% of Chevrolet’s sales outside the United States, the maker is looking to make an impact in markets around the world. The $559 million, seven-year deal with Manchester United, which sidelined the career of at least one senior GM executive, also offers Chevrolet an opportunity to change the conversation around the brand away from the ignition-switch recall controversy, which has swamped the company in recent weeks.

Manchester United, which is considered by some to be the best, if not the best-known, soccer club in the world, will play the L.A. Galaxy of Major League Soccer in the Chevrolet FC Cup, July 23, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. (more…)

General Motors Pulls off a Clean Sweep with North American Car, Truck of the Year

Jurors pick Chevrolet Corvette and Chevrolet Silverado

by on Jan.13, 2014

GM pulled off a sweep of the North American Car & Truck of the Year awards with the Corvette Stingray and Chevy Silverado taking the honors.

A year from the day after unveiling its all-new two-seat sports car – and nearly five years after plunging into bankruptcy – General Motors landed a clean sweep of the influential North American Car and Truck of the Year, company officials declaring that the two awards not only justified the bailout of the giant automaker but made it clear to the world that GM is back in the game.

Going into the opening ceremony at this year’s North American International Auto Show it was far from certain who would take the car and truck honors in what was seen by many members of the jury as perhaps the most competitive group of finalists in the 21 years of balloting for North American Car and Truck of the Year.

NASCAR's Jeff Gordon helps kick off the 2013 SEMA Show by unveiling his new Chevrolet SS concept.

With the SEMA Show set to open its doors in Las Vegas, automakers are rolling out a wide range of concepts – and even a few production vehicles.  Chevrolet has been trickling out previews of some of the special models it will have on display at the Las Vegas Convention Center, and now says it will reveal nine special performance models, in all.

We already offered a close-up of one of these, the Chevrolet Silverado Cheyenne Concept, a special, lightweight version of the full-size 2014 pickup that gets the added benefit of a new 6.2-liter V-8. But the Cheyenne will have some competition drawing crowds to the Chevy stand from an assortment of other models, including the COPO Camaro, the Suburban Half-Pipe Concept, and even the Brad Paisley Signature Silverado bearing the country store’s logo – and whopping 22-inch wheels.

For those unfamiliar with the SEMA Show, it’s the annual aftermarket extravaganza put on by the Specialty Equipment Marketers Association, and manufacturers like Chevrolet have turned it into a showcase not only for the brand but the huge array of accessories that can transform a mundane sedan or pickup into a unique expression of a buyer’s personality.

Diesel Model Tally Set to Double for 2014

Nissan, Audi, Chevrolet key to rapid growth.

by on Aug.22, 2013

At 46 mpg highway, the new Chevy Cruze Turbo Diesel gives even hybrids a run for their (gas) money.

The number of diesel models on the U.S. market should double during the 2014 model-year, according to various industry-watchers, the high-mileage powertrain technology set to get its biggest boost since falling out of favor with American motorists back in the 1980s.

The sudden surge reflects the advent of new diesel technology that not only maintains an estimated 30% mileage advantage over gasoline engines, but also resolves traditional concerns such as noise, roughness and foul-smelling emissions.

It also reflects the return to the diesel market by manufacturers like General Motors, the emergence of new makers including Nissan, and the expansion of offerings by diesel leaders such as Volkswagen and is luxury arm Audi. (more…)

Volkswagen Group Tops Latest JD Power APEAL Study

GM, Ford follow close behind as Toyota slides.

by on Jul.24, 2013

Shining bright: the Porsche Boxster was one of the highest-ranked models in the 2013 JD Power APEAL.

Volkswagen grabbed the top spot in the latest J.D. Power APEAL study, a survey that focuses on the things that surprise and delight car buyers rather than the problems that frustrate them. The German maker’s Porsche and Audi brands topped the annual report while five individual VW Group models led their individual product segments.

General Motors and Ford Motor Co. followed close behind. In fact, GM’s Chevrolet division had more segment winners than any other brand, a sudden surge that echoed Chevy’s unexpectedly strong performance in J.D. Power’s closely watched Initial Quality Survey, or IQS, last month.

An Appealing News Source!

Another surprise came with the poor performance of Toyota. Though its premium Lexus division landed in fifth place in the latest APEAL study, the flagship Toyota brand came in fifth from the bottom, two spots lower than the Japanese maker’s youth-oriented Scion division.

Perhaps less unexpected was the continued dominance of well-equipped luxury vehicles over mainstream brands and products. Only a handful of non-luxury brands scored above the industry average and none landed in the Top 10.
