Automakers Turning CES into a High-Tech Car Show This Year

Ford, Chevrolet, BMW, Toyota, VW and others to make major announcements.

by on Jan.04, 2016

VW offers a hint of the electric microbus it's expected to unveil at CES this coming week.

You’ll be hearing plenty about the so-called “Internet of Things,” and there’ll be rooms full of next-generation TVs and digital cameras. But some of the biggest headlines to come out of the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week will be made by automotive manufacturers.

Ford is expected to announce a major alliance with Google; General Motors will reveal the production version of its long-range electric vehicle, the Chevrolet Bolt and, among other announcements to come from CES, Volkswagen will unveil a new battery-electric minivan.

Many of those announcements might, in years past, have been made just a week later, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but “The traditional approach, having all new cars debut at a traditional car show, has been eroding,” said Stephanie Brinley, senior analyst with IHS Automotive. “And CES is part of that erosion.”

Chevy marketing chief Alan Batey (center right) announcing the maker's new 4G LTE system.

Chevrolet will begin transforming “most” of its models into high-speed Internet access points when it begins offering in-car 4G LTE capabilities starting next year.

General Motors’ largest brand is teaming up with AT&T to offer the in-car connectivity as a way to improve access to smartphone apps and other services.  Motorists will be able to cruise music services like TuneIn, watch movies on laptop computers and tablets, use web-based phone services such as Skype and access new “car concierge” services, Chevrolet revealed during a news conference at the annual Consumer Electronics Show, or CES, in Las Vegas.

Stey Connected!

“We will be building in 4G LTE technology in most of our (Chevrolet) portfolio in the U.S. and Canada, everything from an entry-level hatchback on up,” Tim Nixon, GM’s Chief Technology Officer, said during a media background briefing.

The rollout will begin in the 2015 model-year with the Chevrolet Corvette, Impala, Malibu and Volt models.  (more…)

Chevy Introduces Corvette Performance Data Recorder

“Like having a 32-GB crew chief” onboard.

by on Jan.05, 2014

The Performance Data Recorder follows Corvette Racing Team driver Tommy Milner turning a lap around Florida's Sebring Raceway.

Whether you’re a serious racer hoping to improve your lap times or just want to see how well you can handle the curves on a weekend run through the country, Chevrolet is offering Corvette buyers a way to get some fast feedback.

The automaker is using the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to introduce its new Corvette Performance Data Recorder. The maker claims the optional device is the first in the industry to integrate audio, video and the ability to capture real-time vehicle telemetry.  The information can be viewed from the car – when parked, of course – or downloaded to a personal computer. It can even be analyzed to improve a driver’s technique.

Your Performance News Source!

“The Performance Data Recorder combines the ability to record and share drive videos with the power of a professional-level motorsports telemetry system,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer. “Drivers can easily record and share their experiences driving down the Tail of the Dragon or lapping Road Atlanta. In addition, with the included telemetry software users can analyze their laps in incredible detail, and find opportunities to improve their driving and lap times.”
