Ford Boosting the (Horsepower and Gear) Numbers for 2017 F-150

New 10-speed gearbox developed in joint venture with GM.

by on May.05, 2016

The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor.

Ford is playing it by the numbers as it gets ready to roll out the updated, 2017 F-150 pickup.

The full-size truck, the most popular version of the comprehensive Ford F-Series line-up, has undergone a number of big changes over the last two years, starting with its switch to a lighter, “aluminum-intensive” body. It’s also gotten an assortment of downsized engines, including a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 that was already one of the F-150’s toughest haulers. But the twin-turbo package will get a 30 pound-feet bump for 2017, even as it delivers better fuel economy.

Keep on Truckin'!

A key to the mileage increase is the launch of an all-new 10-speed automatic transmission. That new gearbox was developed as part of an unusual partnership between Ford and erstwhile rival General Motors. Expect to see it roll out on a variety of Ford and GM products over the next several years.

First Camaro ZL1 Goes for $250,000

Charity auction aids YMCA.

The first retail Camaro ZL1 crosses the auction block at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Las Vegas.

The first Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 garnered a cool quarter-mil when it went across the auction block at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Las Vegas over the weekend.

The most powerful version of the Chevy muscle car ever built will reach showrooms early next year at a decidedly more affordable price – anticipated to be somewhere around $50,000.  But the very collectible first retail Camaro ZL1, offered by a Sin City dealer, was aimed at raising money for the YMCA of Southern Nevada.

Curiously, it was another dealer who anted up the winning bid.  Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports and chairman of the Hendrick Automotive Group, took the gavel at $250,000.  He’ll have to pony up the money now though he’ll only take delivery of his new Chevy Camaro ZL1 sometime during the first quarter of 2012.

The wait should be worth it considering the ZL1 Hendrick will get will be the only one produced with a Carbon Flash Metallic exterior. It will be the 69th ZL1 to roll off the line at the Oshawa Assembly Plant, in tribute to the legendary 1969 Camaro ZL1, of which only 69 were produced.

Fast, faster, fastest.

Chevy takes aim at the Mustang Shelby GT with the new 580-hp Camaro ZL1.

It’s been a quarter century since Chevrolet last held the lead in the pony car race and it’s ready to up the horsepower count to keep its lead over its perennial rival, the Ford Mustang.

The trick to remaining king-of-the-hill, Chevy planners recognize, is to keep a steady stream of updates to the recently revised Camaro.  So, we’ve already seen the addition of a ragtop and now comes the ZL1.  While Chevy gave us a peek at the high, higher, highest-performance version of the Camaro line-up a few months back, the maker is now giving us some official numbers.  And they aren’t going to make the folks at Ford happy.

When it hits showrooms sometime in the mid-2012 model-year the Camaro ZL1’s 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 will make a jaw-dropping 580 horsepower and 556 lb-ft of torque.  That’s aimed “right between the eyes” of the 550-horsepower Mustang Shelby GT, noted Camaro chief engineer Al Oppenheiser.
