Latest addition will target downsized imports like BMW X1.

by on Nov.19, 2015

The Cadillac XT5 at its LA debut, along with Caddy Pres. Johan de Nysschen and GM global product development director Mark Reuss.

With the official L.A. Auto Show debut of the Cadillac XT5, the Detroit luxury brand plans an unprecedented assault on the booming utility vehicle market, with three other crossover-based models under development.

That’s one more CUV than Caddy officials had previously confirmed, TheDetroitBureau.com has learned, the latest planned addition meant to target the likes of the Audi Q3 and BMW X1. It will enter one of the world’s fastest-growing vehicle segments, senior company officials said.

“We keep expanding the plan,” said Johan de Nysschen, president of the Cadillac brand. The decision was made because such compact utility vehicles are experiencing “strong growth in China, and as more Millennials enter the luxury segment that will expand growth in the U.S., as well.

The Cadillac XT5 replaces the old SRX.

Forget Chevrolet, which sports the ad tagline, “Find New Roads.” It’s sibling brand Cadillac that is looking for new routes to reach out to the global luxury car market.

The process began with the move of its corporate headquarters from Detroit to New York last year. Now, Caddy has decided to reveal its all-new 2017 XT5 crossover at the Dubai Motor Show in November before rolling it out at the Los Angeles Motor Show later in the month.

General Motors is recalling 410,000 Cadillac SRX SUVs from 2010 to 2015 for a suspension problem.

General Motors is adding another 524,000 vehicles to its seemingly never-ending tally of recalled cars and trucks. The latest actions put the maker just shy of 30 million vehicles since the beginning of the year.

The automaker on Monday recalled 120,000 2010-15 Cadillac SRX SUVs in China and Canada for suspension issues, but declined to release the number of vehicles in the U.S. affected by the problem.

Auto Insight!

Today, GM said it would include 290,107 2010-15 Cadillac SRX and 2011-12 Saab 9-4X SUVs in the U.S. with the problem. (more…)

Cadillac Takes Aim at Lexus

Compact CUV could undercut rival’s crossover dominance.

by on Aug.30, 2012

Cadillac's new ATS may soon have a lot more company in the showroom - including a compact CUV.

Once the reigning U.S. luxury brand Cadillac is eager to reclaim lost ground and has put a target on the back of Lexus, which was itself the best-selling luxury brand until last year’s Japanese earthquake violently disrupted production.

The 2013 model-year will be a big one for the U.S. maker, as it rolls out both the new ATS compact luxury sedan and the more upscale XTS.  Cadillac is also working on plans to expand its line-up even further, officials now openly discussing plans to add a compact crossover – as TheDetroitBureau.com first reported.

When asked about which brand was likely to windup to “donate” some market share as the deck is reshuffled in the luxury, segment, Cadillac’s marketing boss Don Butler didn’t hesitate – “Lexus,” he said, suggesting it certainly has a large pool of owners who could be persuaded to try something different.

First Look: 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK

A crowded crop of compact crossovers.

by on Mar.26, 2012

Mercedes hints the diesel GLK 250 will be the most fuel-efficient offering in its segment.

We’re going to be seeing a crowded crop of compact crossovers in the coming months, and there’ll be something for seemingly every wallet, with all-new offerings as well as updates like the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK set to roll into showrooms.

It seems the German maker will be updating both ends of its crossover line-up, TheDetroitBureau.com previously revealing the new GL that will make its debut at the New York Auto Show next month.  Now, we can take a closer look at the 2013 Mercedes GLK –which will also make its first appearance in the Big Apple.

Be in the Know!

For those with a weak grasp of the Teutonic tongue, that “K” makes all the difference.  It’s German for “kurz,” and like the SLK and CLK designations, means a downsized model.  In this case, the smallest of the Mercedes-Benz crossovers, designed to compete with the likes of the BMW X3, the Audi Q5 and even the Cadillac SRX.

The timing of this modest update probably couldn’t be better considering that rising fuel prices have lots of buyers looking to downsize.  Better yet, Mercedes is signaling that the 2013 GLK will offer a new diesel option that could make it the most fuel-efficient offering in the compact luxury crossover segment.

Cadillac Planning Numerous Product, Concept Roll-outs in 2012 – 2013

New crossover, update of Ciel premium luxury model in mix.

by on Jan.13, 2012

Advanced designer Clay Dean's studio is busy working up new Cadillac products, including a follow-up to the ultra-luxury Ciel, shown here..

It’s been a busy few months from Cadillac, what with the L.A. Auto Show launch of the new XTS premium-luxury sedan and the introduction in Detroit of the new ATS entry-lux model.  “But we’re not getting any time off,” a senior Caddy official told TheDetroitBureau.com during a background conversation at the Detroit Auto Show.

For his part, General Motors North America President Mark Reuss acknowledges there are a number of “open spaces” in the Cadillac line-up, and that it will be essential to fill at least some of them if the maker aims to regain a level of competitiveness against the dominant German and Japanese luxury brands, like BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus.

Reuss declined to discuss specifics for Cadillac’s expanded line-up, but in a series of background conversations, company officials provided an outline that hints at an aggressive new product strategy that will bring at least one, and possibly two new crossovers to market, while we will also be seeing a follow-up to the well-received Ciel super-premium luxury concept that Caddy rolled out at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance last August.

Cadillac Giving High-Performance V6 to SRX

Maker revamping line-up.

by on Apr.13, 2011

Caddy will drop a new, 300-hp 3.6-liter V6 into the SRX crossover for 2012.

The hot topic may be fuel economy, these days, but performance still matters, especially to luxury car buyers, it seems.

So, Cadillac is planning to put the focus on “red-blooded luxury” with a 3.6-liter direct-injection V6 that it plans to drop into the popular SRX crossover later this year.

The 2012 SRX will see horsepower jump from 265 – with the current, 3.0-liter V6 – to 300, while torque will climb from 223 lb-ft to 260.  Fuel economy is expected to be comparable to the current model’s 18 mpg City and 25 Highway, the maker says.

A Smart Source for Auto News!

The SRX was completely redesigned for the 2010 model-year and quickly saw a more than 150% increase in sales.

But it has lagged behind other models in the Cadillac line-up when it comes to performance.  General Motors’ flagship brand has added a number of new V-Series offerings, including the 2011 CTS-V Coupe, which churns 556 horsepower out of its 6.2-liter supercharged V8.

Cadillac Developing SRX Plug-In Hybrid

System would differ from Chevy Volt technology.

by on Dec.22, 2010

Cadillac is developing a plug-in hybrid version of its new SRX crossover, sources say.

General Motors’ new Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid could soon get a little brother, this time wearing a Cadillac badge.  Make that a big brother, as the maker will likely add a battery-based version of Caddy’s SRX crossover.

Several GM sources tell TheDetroitBureau.com that a battery-based model is under development and could reach market in the next two to three years as part of a plan to expand Cadillac’s line-up while also positioning the brand as a serious player in advanced – green – technology, a sector where it currently lags many of its import and domestic rivals.

Two years ago, Cadillac gave a hint of what could come when it unveiled the Converj concept vehicle.  The distinctive little prototype was intended to use the same driveline as the Chevy Volt.  But while there was initially a push to bring the car to market, interest waned as GM managers had to turn their attention, last year, to the company’s desperate financial problems.

First Look: Saab 9-4X Crossover

One step at a time.

by on Nov.17, 2010

Saab's new 9-4X debuts in Los Angeles.

This time last year, things were looking increasingly bleak, almost by the day, for Sweden’s Saab.  Its owner, General Motors, was planning to either sell the small brand off or shut it down, and as the New Year approached, the latter option looked more and more likely.

Indeed, the assembly line at Trollhattan did come to a halt for about six weeks before Saab’s unexpected white knight, the small Dutch sports carmaker, Spyker, came to the rescue.  Today, production of the Saab 9-5 flagship is pretty much back on track.  And the next step in the Swedish company’s nascent recovery is being revealed at the 2010 Los Angeles Motor Show.

Though Saab briefly tried to find a niche with the old and largely-unloved 9-7X, industry observers believe it’s got a much better chance of hitting a home run – or at least a solid double – with the new 9-4X, the maker’s first crossover-utility vehicle.

Most everyone can agree that styling is critical for new vehicle’s sales. But beyond styling, even the basic shape of the vehicle is important.

Consider the first-generation Cadillac SRX. While many in the motoring press gave it fantastic reviews, buyers were left cold.

General Motors thinks it knows why. The first-generation vehicle was too low, too long. In other words, it was a station wagon and Americans’ dislike for station wagons is well known.

For the second generation SRX, GM corrected those issues. The new vehicle is shorter in length, but taller. The third row is jettisoned in the process. Of course, the SRX is dressed in the latest iteration of GM’s knife-edge Art and Science design style. One really cool detail: A character line that starts on the side of the front bumper is continued through the doors after it skips the front wheel well.

Recall news!

Many more changes accompany the new crossover. Gone is the rear-wheel drive platform, replaced with front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive, as before, is an option. A pair of new engines replace horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 and the 4.6-liter Northstar V-8.
