Caddy, Lincoln Big Apple Debuts Also Target China

Chinese buyers will be critical for success of CT6, Continental sedans.

Ford CEO Mark Fields said the Continental plays a "critical" role in the revival of the Lincoln brand, including driving sales in China.

Hoping to regain their once-lofty positions in the hierarchy of global luxury brands, Cadillac and Lincoln launched two critical new products at the New York International Auto Show this week. But while the new Cadillac CT6 and Lincoln Continental might be on display in the Big Apple, the two makers are also hoping that Chinese buyers pay close attention.

That’s because China is expected to become the world’s largest luxury car market within the next year or so – and it already leads the world in the purchase of premium luxury models, such as the big CT6 and Continental, noted Ford Motor Co. CEO Mark Fields.

Cadillac will go through a major strategic realignment that will see it spun off as a separate business unit and move its headquarters to New York City, the General Motors brand will confirm today.

While key operations, including sales, marketing and product planning, will move to the Big Apple, Caddy’s design and engineering efforts will remain in the Motor City. And they will be extremely busy in the years to come, according to Johan de Nysschen, the new Cadillac global brand chief who spoke to TheDetroitBureau.com in an exclusive interview.

The one-time “standard of the world” is getting ready to unleash a product blitz intended to challenge its ambitious German rivals, covering everything from a new entry-level model to the upper reaches of the luxury market. Cadillac expects to chalk up big sales gains this year thanks to the growing popularity of the new Cadillac ATS and the arrival of the new Cadillac CTS this fall, which was unveiled at the New York International Auto Show.

Bob Ferguson, the head of General Motors’ luxury car unit, noted after the unveiling of the 2014 CTS that Cadillac sales are up 30 percent through the first two months of 2013. “I see that continuing,” said Ferguson. In addition, 70 percent of the sales of new ATS, which was named North American Car of The Year in January, are to buyers new to the Cadillac brand, he said.

In addition, the third generation of the CTS is due this fall and serves to underscore Cadillac’s determination to challenge the trio of German brands, Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, that have come to define the luxury segment, he said.

Cadillac Changing Game with Third-Generation CTS

No more “tweener” car.

The Vsport version of the 2014 Cadillac CTS -- shown during its NY debut -- will feature the new 420-horsepower Twin Turbo V6.

It’s been a good year, so far, for Cadillac.  The new ATS compact took honors as the North American Car of the Year and, along with the equally new XTS, Caddy sales have shown the sort of momentum General Motors’ flagship brand it hasn’t seen in years.

Yet, the real story begins this week at the Big Apple’s Jacob Javits Center, where New York Auto Show Show-goers are getting their first look at the all-new 2014 Cadillac CTS.  After years of trying to position the sedan in its own distinct niche, the new model is about to go head-to-head with some of the toughest competitors in the luxury market.

Images of New Cadillac CTS Leak Out

Just days ahead of its planned unveiling at the New York Auto Show, images of the all-new, third-generation Cadillac CTS have “leaked” out on the Internet through what some suggest is a coy way for the automaker to drum up advance interest.

And it’s likely to do just that. That CTS has been Cadillac’s best-selling model for much of the past decade and is expected to undergo a significant makeover for 2014 that will result in a larger and more luxurious vehicle. Where it has been something of a “tweener” car in its first two generations, the 2014 Cadillac CTS is expected to take direct aim at some of the toughest competitors in the business, notably including the BMW 5-Series.

Cadillac has shown an unexpected ability to take on the Germans with the smaller ATS model launched last year. The 3-Series-sized sedan has won an assortment of kudos, including being named North American Car of the Year last January.
