Cadillac Confirms Plans for CT6 Plug-In Hybrid

Fuel economy could top 40 mpg.

The Cadillac CT6 PHEV will be the first in an assortment of plug-in models to follow.

Cadillac has pulled the wraps off a second version of its new CT6 sedan, unveiling a plug-in hybrid version of the flagship model at the Shanghai Motor Show.

The announcement confirms a report by TheDetroitBureau.com earlier this month that also revealed the CT6 PHEV will be the first in a broad range of plug-in hybrids planned by Cadillac covering most of its product line-up by the end of the decade.

Unlike the current Caddy ELR, however, the Cadillac CT6 PHEV will deliver performance equal to that of the twin-turbo V-6 that will be the top-line gasoline engine for the full-size luxury sedan. But it is also expected to double the fuel economy, which could translate into a combined city/highway rating in excess of 40 miles per gallon.

Cadillac to Debut CT6 Plug-in Hybrid in Shanghai

The new Cadillac CT6 will follow its NY debut with a rollout in China of a plug-in version.

Cadillac will follow this week’s debut of the CT6, with news that its new flagship sedan will also get a plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

But the PHEV system set to officially debut at the Shanghai Motor Show later this month won’t be the anemic system found in Caddy’s compact current plug-in model, the compact ELR. It will deliver similar performance to the new twin-turbo V-6 being offered in the CT6. And that system will eventually be used in a variety of other Cadillac models, the brand’s global boss told TheDetroitBureau.com.

“We’re going to roll out plug-in hybrid technology across the spectrum of Cadillac cars,” promised Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen. As a result, “we won’t need a car like the ELR.”

Though Cadillac officials were reluctant to go into extensive detail about the CT6 plug-in hybrid, hoping to maintain some secrets to reveal at the Shanghai show, TheDetroitBureau.com was able to pry loose some of the more critical information.

Cadillac Aims to “Reinvent” Premium Luxury Segment with New CT6

The Cadillac CT6 makes its official debut the night before the opening of the 2015 NY Auto Show.

With the official unveiling of its new CT6 sedan, Cadillac is setting out to “reinvent the premium luxury segment, global president Johan de Nysschen declared Tuesday evening. But the debut of the big sedan is also about reinventing the once-dominant Cadillac brand itself.

In the works since late 2009, shortly after parent General Motors emerged from bankruptcy, the Cadillac CT6 will go up against some of the world’s toughest competitors, vehicles such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7-Series and Audi A8. But Caddy officials insist they went to play the game on their own terms as they begin an $8 billion product program that will more than double the breadth of the brand’s current line-up.

The process began with the debut of the small ATS and mid-range CTS, and now moves to the premium segment where Caddy hasn’t been a significant player in years. “The challenge, us to reinvent the large luxury segment, a category Cadillac once called its own,” said de Nysschen, during a preview ahead of the official opening of the New York Auto Show.

Lincoln digs into its history to come up with an all-new Continental flagship concept sedan.

It’s been a busy year for luxury automakers who have unleashed a flood of new products at shows around the world in recent months. And the season will wrap up with the unveiling of such new models as the popular Lexus RX crossover, as well as the $205,000 Range Rover SVAutobiography at the New York Auto Show this week.

But two of Detroit’s two luxury brands are likely to capture much of the spotlight in the Big Apple as they roll out new flagship sedans that Cadillac and Lincoln hope will begin the process of rebuilding their once-lofty rolls in the high-line automotive market.

Cadillac Previews New Engine Family for CT6 Flagship Sedan.

Cadillac's new twin-turbo V-6 was designed to deliver plenty of power while maximizing mileage.

When Cadillac’s first car rolled out in 1902 it was powered by a single-cylinder motor making a whopping 10 horsepower. You can expect five more cylinders and a lot more muscle under the hood when the new Caddy CT6 debuts at the New York Auto Show next week.

Among the various powertrains the new flagship sedan will be offered with, Cadillac plans to offer a pair of new V-6s, including a 3.0-liter twin-turbo package that will balance performance and fuel-economy thanks to technologies such as displacement-on-demand and engine Stop/Start.

Cadillac Sales Stage Sharp Upturn

New products like ATS give Caddy a much-needed lift.

Cadillac is gaining momentum on the competition with new models like the ATS.

After a disappointing finish to 2012, Cadillac got some much-needed momentum when its new ATS compact luxury sedan was named North American Car of the Year. That big boost from a panel of 50 U.S. and Canadian journalists is clearly paying off.

Along with the traction it’s gaining from other new and updated products, such as the flagship XTS sedan, Cadillac is beginning to regain some of the ground it has lost in recent years to imports like Lexus, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi.

And with a remake of its mid-range CTS set to debut later this month, General Motor’s flagship brand is finally seeing some upside after years of decline, sales for the first two months of this year climbing by nearly a third over the same period in 2012.

Sean McAlinden, executive vice president of research at the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan, noted Cadillac is also benefitting from the broader revival of GM’s product development efforts. “This is the year GM product development catches up,” said McAlinden.
