Cadillac Unplugs the ELR Plug-In

Caddy shifts focus to upcoming CT6 plug-in.

by on May.18, 2016

Driving off into the sunset: Cadillac has given up on trying to salvage the ELR plug-in hybrid.

If you’re determined to drive something green that has plenty of luxury touches but a price tag significantly less than that of a Tesla, you might want to head over to your local Cadillac dealer.

The luxury maker quietly pulled the plug on the ELR, a high-line version of the Chevrolet Volt, due a decidedly weak response by American motorists. Though the Caddy plug-in hybrid has been out of production since March, “a very small quantity…remains available at dealers,” Cadillac spokesman Dave Caldwell told TheDetroitBureau.com.

Your Auto Insider!

Launched with high expectations just two years ago, the Cadillac ELR never seemed to charge up the market. Originally priced at $76,000, or nearly double that of a Volt, Caddy tried a number of tricks to build momentum including about $11,000 in price cuts.

Cadillac Boosts Performance, Cuts Price of ELR Plug-In Hybrid

Move follows cut in price of Chevrolet Spark EV.

by on Apr.15, 2015

Cadillac is looking to stimulate sales of the ELR with a price cut and a power increase.

Cadillac is boosting the performance of its ELR coupe even as it cuts the price of the plug-in hybrid in a bid to boost so far anemic sales of the compact battery vehicle.

The 2016 Cadillac ELR will get 25% more torque and horsepower, enough to launch it from 0 to 60 in just 6.4 seconds. At the same time, its base price will dip to $65,995 prior to U.S. federal tax credits of $7,500. Whether that will help move the needle is far from certain, however.

Electrifying!

Cutting the price on plug-in electrics is in vogue these days. In fact, GM stablemate Chevy announced yesterday it was cutting the price on the Spark by 6% as well as offering a low-mileage lease of $139 a month. Tesla, perhaps the closest comparison to the ELR in terms of segment, introduced a base model for its Model S lineup with a price that is $10k lower than the next best model in the maker’s line-up. Ford, Hyundai, Kia and BMW have all announced low-priced lease options or prices cuts on their EVs to try to stimulate sales. (more…)

Cadillac Counting on New Product to Reverse Slump

New Caddy boss expected to accelerate product expansion plans.

by on Jul.30, 2014

The new Cadillac crest - minus the wreath - debuts on the 2015 ATS Coupe.

“New product is the lifeblood of any brand,” said Jim Vurpillat, the marketing director for Cadillac, as he took a break during a media drive of the luxury maker’s new ATS Coupe.  He and the rest of Cadillac’s management team certainly have to hope so after the unexpected slide the General Motors division has taken so far this year.

The ATS Coupe, a new line of performance models, a flagship sedan, a compact crossover and other new products are moving their way through the Caddy pipeline. But the brand could see the pace of that rollout accelerate in the near future under the guidance of a new global brand boss who will officially join the Caddy team later this week.

Your Inside Source!

Johan de Nysschen, most recently the CEO of Nissan’s Infiniti division and before that head of Audi of America, was brought in as part of a plan to give Cadillac more independence from GM. And company insiders suggest that the South African-born executive negotiated a deal that will also give Caddy more of the product it needs to compete against aggressive German rivals Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi, as well as Infiniti, Lexus, Lincoln and luxury upstart Hyundai.

Cadillac Loses Another Top Exec

Turmoil at the top as sales bottom out.

by on Jun.19, 2014

Bill Peffer becomes the third U.S. sales chief to leave Cadillac in less than two years.

This was supposed to be a big year for Cadillac as it rolled out new models like the CTS and updated Escalade, and solidified the gains of other recent models, such as the compact ATS and big XTS sedans. But instead of growth, the brand has been wracked with turmoil, losing a procession of senior managers as sales have unexpectedly tumbled.

Cadillac’s only recently hired U.S. sales chief has left the company for supposedly personal reasons. Whether he fell short of expectations, General Motors isn’t revealing, but the luxury brand’s volume was down 2.3% for the first five months of the year, a sharp disappointment considering Caddy had been anticipating double-digit sales growth in 2014.

The departure of Bill Peffer, who joined GM just last autumn, is the latest in a series of executive departures, a list that includes former Cadillac global strategic development chief Don Butler, who left the company last August, and Peffer’s predecessor Chase Hawkins, who was fired as sales chief for “violating a company policy.”

2015 Cadillac ELR Takes Green Car Tech Award for “Regen on Demand”

System gives Caddy ELR a more sporty feel – and longer range.

by on Jan.23, 2014

Cadillac's ELR allows a driver to send more energy back to the battery with the tap of a paddle shifter.

Paddle shifters have become increasingly commonplace in recent years, a way for motorists to get a more sporty feel from vehicles equipped with an automatic gearbox – but Cadillac has taken an alternative approach with its new ELR plug-in hybrid which uses its paddle shifters to increase the amount of energy that can be regenerated and stored in its battery pack.

Dubbed Regen on Demand, the new system was honored as “Green Car Technology of the Year” during a ceremony at the 2014 Washington Auto Show, beating out nine other environmentally friendly technology including a new Audi turbodiesel, a super-light carbon fiber body from BMW and Hyundai’s new hydrogen fuel-cell system.

“Ever-increasing efficiency is crucial to our driving future,” said Ron Cogan, publisher of the magazine Green Car Journal, which organizes the annual award, who called the Cadillac Regen on Demand technology, “an intriguing feature that adds a new dimension to the driving experience.”

New Cadillac ATS Coupe to Get Detroit Auto Show Debut

One of many new models under development.

by on Nov.25, 2013

Cadillac is prepping a new coupe version of the ATS.

Gone are the days when a luxury manufacturer could get by with just a handful of different product lines.  These days, high-line makers are racing to fill in all the white spaces they can think of.  Just think BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

And while Cadillac officials say they won’t try to match their German competitors model for model, General Motors’ flagship brand is well aware that it, too, needs to expand what has been, in recent years, a fairly narrow line-up.

Your Trusted Source!

A number of new products have been launched of late, the new Cadillac ELR plug-in hybrid and CTS sedan just the latest. But you can bet there are more on the horizon – including an all-new coupe version of the compact Caddy ATS that, we’re hearing, should make its debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show less than two months from now.

Cadillac Considers More Battery-Car Options

Maker also developing business plan for Elmiraj concept.

by on Oct.31, 2013

Cadillac is looking at adding other battery-based vehicles that would follow the ELR plug-in, shown here.

Even though its new plug-in hybrid, the Cadillac ELR, is still nearly two months from launch, the Detroit luxury maker is giving serious thought to adding more battery-based vehicles to its line-up, TheDetroitBureau.com has learned.

Other models could include an even larger and more upscale offering than the compact ELR, confided Caddy’s global sales chief Bob Ferguson, who said the technology could generate significant interest among buyers – both at home and abroad – who don’t have General Motors’ flagship brand on their radar screens.

In a wide-ranging discussion, Ferguson also told TheDetroitBureau.com that there is growing support inside GM for transforming the well-reviewed Elmiraj concept vehicle into a production vehicle – and as quickly as possible, though formal corporate approval is not yet a certainty.

“I’m so optimistic about how well (the Cadillac ELR plug-in) will do, especially on the West Coast and in the Northeast,” said Ferguson during a one-on-one discussion with TheDetroitBureau.com. “It will bring us a lot of new customers, I’m sure.”

Still a Month From Launch, BMW Considering Boosting Production of i3 Battery-Car

Initial demand outstripping planned capacity.

by on Oct.15, 2013

The production version of the all-electric BMW i3 city car will go on sale in Europe on November 16th and in the U.S. by mid-2014.

The first of BMW’s new “i” branded battery-cars won’t start rolling into European showrooms next months – U.S. sales to start next years – but initial demand is so strong that the Bavarian maker is already talking about ramping up production.

Customers have already placed orders for 8,000 of the new BMW i3 city cars, which will eventually be sold with a choice of either a pure battery-electric drivetrain or an optional range-extender which adds a small internal combustion engine that can allow a motorist to keep going even when the battery runs down.

“If demand holds, which is what it’s looking like, we will soon have to invest more,” said BMW Chief Financial Officer Friedrich Eichiner during an Amsterdam news conference.  That translates, he clarified into “adjust(ing) capacity according to demand.”

Cadillac ELR to Go on Sale in January

Caddy takes aim at Tesla in the premium battery-car market.

by on Oct.11, 2013

At $75,995 - before federal tax credits - the 2014 Cadillac ELR will cost nearly twice as much as the Chevrolet Volt.

Cadillac will begin offering its first battery-car, the plug-in 2014 ELR, in January.  Sharing the basic underpinnings of the more mainstream Chevrolet Volt, the Caddy ELR will test the waters for more up-market battery vehicles – and begin the General Motors’ promised campaign to “tackle” rival Tesla Motors.

At $75,995, including a $995 destination charge, the 2014 Cadillac ELR will cost nearly twice as much – before federal tax incentives — as the Chevy Volt which has undergone several price reductions this year in an effort to help spur lagging sales. Industry analysts have suggested that price, as much as limited range, is a major factor in the slow growth of the nascent battery-car market.

The Last Word!

Manufacturers have been rethinking strategy, looking at more upscale options in the hope that green-minded luxury buyers will be less sensitive to the price premium for battery technology.  With the exception of last month when the entire industry saw a sales dip, Tesla had largely defied the slump faced by most other battery-car manufacturers, its Model S sedan going for as much as $108,000 when fully loaded.

Cadillac Still Has Plans for Halo Car

Full-size premium model still a go; several halo alternatives under study.

by on Jul.03, 2013

The debut of the Cadillac Ciel concept led many Caddy fans to hope the maker would soon launch one or more "halo" cars.

Were Mark Twain covering the auto beat he might begin by declaring that reports of the death of Cadillac’s planned “halo” car have been greatly exaggerated.

There’ve been several widely discussed stories over the past few days suggesting that Cadillac has given up on a planned $100,000 “show-stopper,” possibly based on the Cadillac Ciel concept vehicle because General Motors bean-counters couldn’t pencil in an appropriate business case to justify the necessary investment.

TheDetroitBureau.com has been advised that, indeed, a “large luxury” model has been scrapped from the Cadillac plan. But several sources have stressed that the decision had more to do with the potential for that specific design than anything else.

Maintain Your Love Affair with the Automobile!

That does not impact the ongoing development of a large, rear-wheel-drive model that will sit atop the current Caddy lineup-topping XTS model. And preliminary work continues on several other possible halo vehicles that would be based off that big car’s platform.

It’s likely the luxury maker will reveal more when it unveils a large luxury concept at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August, TheDetroitBureau.com has learned.
