The Cadillac XT5 at its LA debut, along with Caddy Pres. Johan de Nysschen and GM global product development director Mark Reuss.

With the official L.A. Auto Show debut of the Cadillac XT5, the Detroit luxury brand plans an unprecedented assault on the booming utility vehicle market, with three other crossover-based models under development.

That’s one more CUV than Caddy officials had previously confirmed, has learned, the latest planned addition meant to target the likes of the Audi Q3 and BMW X1. It will enter one of the world’s fastest-growing vehicle segments, senior company officials said.

“We keep expanding the plan,” said Johan de Nysschen, president of the Cadillac brand. The decision was made because such compact utility vehicles are experiencing “strong growth in China, and as more Millennials enter the luxury segment that will expand growth in the U.S., as well.

The Cadillac XT5 replaces the old SRX.

It’s a big year for Cadillac as the maker rolls out a procession of new and updated product, and in an unusual move, General Motors’ flagship brand has headed to the Middle East to introduce the replacement for its aging SRX crossover-utility vehicle.

Like other new models, the new XT5 unveiled at the Dubai Motor Show adopts a new alphanumeric naming strategy first launched with the big CT6 sedan. It slots into one of the most important niches in the utility vehicle segment, just beneath the full-size Escalade – the only Cadillac model that will retain its traditional name.

“The XT5 not only enters the most popular segment in the worldwide luxury auto market, it is the first of four new crossovers from Cadillac,” Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen said in a statement. “It’s pivotal to our ongoing growth, which is why we’ve developed XT5 from the inside out to provide customers with more space, technology, luxury and efficiency.” (more…)

Cadillac will go through a major strategic realignment that will see it spun off as a separate business unit and move its headquarters to New York City, the General Motors brand will confirm today.

While key operations, including sales, marketing and product planning, will move to the Big Apple, Caddy’s design and engineering efforts will remain in the Motor City. And they will be extremely busy in the years to come, according to Johan de Nysschen, the new Cadillac global brand chief who spoke to in an exclusive interview.

There was a time when luxury brands sought exclusivity above all else, even if that meant shutting the door on some potential buyers. No longer, as Mercedes-Benz has demonstrated with a rapidly expanding line-up that will soon reach from the under-$30,000 CLA to the top-line S600 Pullman limousine that, in some configurations, could top $1 million.

While Mercedes has confirmed plans to add 30 new or updated models by 2020 – rivals BMW and Audi making similar moves — Cadillac has been subsisting on a handful of products. But that’s about to change.

GM Greenlights New Cadillac Flagship

Sedan to target 7-Series segment; concept likely in early 2013.

A follow-up to the Cadillac Ciel concept, closer to the planned Caddy flagship, is due early next year.

After much internal debate General Motors has apparently agreed to give Cadillac the resources it needs to give serious chase to its European competitors, notably by approving a new 7-Series competitor that will serve as the domestic maker’s flagship sedan.

As recently reported, the new model – which will be heavily influenced by the recent Cadillac Ciel Concept – will be joined by a wide range of additional new Caddy products, including a downsized crossover and a V-Series version of the new ATS entry-luxury sedan.

The new model will also cap Cadillac’s push to finally become a truly global brand.  Though insiders tell the Ciel-based flagship is likely to develop particularly strong demand in China, Caddy also hopes that it can provide a halo in Europe, where the brand has long struggled for traction.

The Bureau has been told that a concept version of the new premium luxury model could appear as early as next January’s Detroit Auto Show.

Most everyone can agree that styling is critical for new vehicle’s sales. But beyond styling, even the basic shape of the vehicle is important.

Consider the first-generation Cadillac SRX. While many in the motoring press gave it fantastic reviews, buyers were left cold.

General Motors thinks it knows why. The first-generation vehicle was too low, too long. In other words, it was a station wagon and Americans’ dislike for station wagons is well known.

For the second generation SRX, GM corrected those issues. The new vehicle is shorter in length, but taller. The third row is jettisoned in the process. Of course, the SRX is dressed in the latest iteration of GM’s knife-edge Art and Science design style. One really cool detail: A character line that starts on the side of the front bumper is continued through the doors after it skips the front wheel well.

Many more changes accompany the new crossover. Gone is the rear-wheel drive platform, replaced with front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive, as before, is an option. A pair of new engines replace horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 and the 4.6-liter Northstar V-8.
