First Drive: 2015 Cadillac ELR

Caddy hopes to plug into luxury battery-car market.

The Cadillac ELR plug-in hybrid.

Even though U.S. motorists haven’t been all that charged up by the nascent battery-car market, there’s a flood of new products heading for showrooms in the coming month. But while most makers are struggling to drive down prices, betting that the cheaper the product the bigger the demand, a handful of manufacturers are targeting the other end of the spectrum.

Among the brands betting that even affluent buyers want to go green are Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and, of course, Tesla which has been beating even its own optimistic forecasts with the Model S electric vehicle. A few months from now, Cadillac will join the upscale list with the launch of its new ELR plug-in hybrid.

Other models could include an even larger and more upscale offering than the compact ELR, confided Caddy’s global sales chief Bob Ferguson, who said the technology could generate significant interest among buyers – both at home and abroad – who don’t have General Motors’ flagship brand on their radar screens.

Stay Plugged In!

In a wide-ranging discussion, Ferguson also told TheDetroitBureau.com that there is growing support inside GM for transforming the well-reviewed Elmiraj concept vehicle into a production vehicle – and as quickly as possible, though formal corporate approval is not yet a certainty.

“I’m so optimistic about how well (the Cadillac ELR plug-in) will do, especially on the West Coast and in the Northeast,” said Ferguson during a one-on-one discussion with TheDetroitBureau.com. “It will bring us a lot of new customers, I’m sure.”

Cadillac “Ultimately” Planning to Tackle Tesla

GM CEO pushes battery cars – though still skeptical about demand.

GM CEO Dan Akerson with the Chevrolet Volt.

It builds fewer cars per quarter than General Motors produces in its pickup truck plants in a matter of days, yet the giant Detroit automaker is increasingly focused on the California battery-car start-up.

That has led GM to launch a study of its little rival’s strategy and technology – and to lay out plans for its flagship brand to take on Tesla with a high-mileage battery car of its own.
