BMW Set to Debut New 8 Series Ahead of Le Mans Return

The race also will bring the debut of the BMW M8 GTE endurance car.

by on May.14, 2018

The new BMW M850i xDrive will have to live in the shadow of the GTE race car until next month.

It’s been seven years since BMW last took to the tarmac in Le Mans – and 19 years since the last 8 Series coupe rolled off its assembly line. Both droughts are about to be broken.

The Bavarian automaker has confirmed it will unveil an all-new 8 Series model on June 15, a day before the BMW M8 GTE will line up on the starting grid for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Both cars are shown in this teaser image, though you’ll have to squint hard to make out many details when it comes to the street-legal 8 Series.

News Now!

“There isn’t be a better setting for the world premiere of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe than the 24-hour race at Le Mans,” said Klaus Fröhlich, board member of the BMW AG, Development, in an announcement accompanying this single image. “The race is a pure demonstration of passion, dynamics and long-distance capability. Its been nearly two decades since BMW pulled its flagship coupe from production. Now, we’re getting a good look at the reborn 8-Series.

Set to replace the lower-level 6-Series, which BMW recently said will be dropped, a concept version of the new 8-Series is set to make its sheet metal debut at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este along Italy’s Lake Como over the weekend.

BMW 8-Series Set to Make its Return

New flagship to return for 2019 model-year.

by on May.11, 2017

BMW offers a tease of the concept 8-Series coupe it will unveil in Italy later this month.

Nearly 20 years after BMW pulled its flagship model from the market, the Bavarian automaker is set to bring the 8-Series back to life.

A teaser image of the new 2018 BMW 8-Series was released today, accompanied by a tweet from CEO Harald Krueger who said, “The next step of our product offensive is taking shape. A glimpse of the new BMW 8-Series Coupe.”

Product News!

Expected to carry a price tag in the 150,000 euros, or roughly $165,000, range, the return of the 8-Series could mark a shake-up in the BMW product family, essentially upgrading and replacing the current 6-Series family. In its new form, the coupe would go up directly against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe.

BMW Concept Could Become New Super-Lux 8- or 9-Series

German maker turns to Beijing for unveiling.

by on Apr.20, 2014

BMW is showing off the new Vision Future Luxury Concept in Beijing this week.

BMW is pulling the wraps off a sleek new coupe-like sedan that could fill one of the few apparent gaps in its rapidly expanding line-up. The prototype on display at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show is considered quite likely to become the maker’s new 8- or 9-Series flagship.

Precisely how close a production model might come to the show car remains to be seen, however. The concept, dubbed the BMW Vision Future Luxury, features some details that are often used to enhance the sex appeal of show cars – such as the rear-hinged, “suicide doors” – that are seldom actually carried over into production models.

Nonetheless, BMW has long been hinting at its desire to fill a niche left open when it dropped the older 8-Series line a few years back.
