BMW 4-Series in the Flesh in Detroit

Bavarian automaker spins the coupe off from the 3-Series sedan line.

by on Jan.14, 2013

BMW is spinning off its 3-Series Coupe into a separate model called the 4-Series.

Is there some danger in moving the coupe version of the BMW’s vaunted 3-Series to a new nomenclature?

Probably not.

BMW pulled the cover off the 4-Series Concept Coupe today at the Detroit Auto Show.

Ian Robertson, member of BMW AG’s Board of Management, said the new car offers a new level of presence, elegance and dynamics.

“In designing the Concept 4 Series, we were determined to make a Coupe that stands above all others in its class,” Robertson said. “The result is an entirely new Coupe with more aesthetic differentiation and more product substance.

BMW’s 4-Series is the coupe counterpart to the 3-Series, just as the 6-Series is to the 5-Series and the 8 is to the 7. Apparently, in BMW-ese, even numbers signify two doors rather than four.

While BMW is calling the car it is showing at the North American International Auto Show a concept, the production version will likely be very close to the show car.

BMW Emphasizes 3-series Efficiency

New 3-series features new turbo four cylinder and hybrid model.

by on Jan.09, 2012

BMW's new 3-series improves efficiency with a new four-cylinder engine and a hybrid model.

The idea of a powerful sports sedan and fuel efficiency would seem to be in direct opposition.

But BMW, the top purveyor of the sports sedan – and most would say, the originator of the concept – is taking on the challenge head on.
BMW rolled out a more efficient new 3-series, it’s most important model, at the Detroit Auto Show on Monday. The sixth-generation model reintroduces a four cylinder engine to the U.S. market, but the automaker also showed the first hybrid version of its most important model.

The 2012 model is expected to go on sale next month. Replacing the outgoing model’s standard 3.0-liter straight six, the new four-cylinder is a turbocharged 2.0 liter producing 240 horsepower powering the base 328i. The 300-horsepower, single-turbo 3.0-liter carries over in the 335i.

There will also be a hybrid version, which will combine a 335-horsepower gasoline engine with an electric motor to provide about 37 miles per gallon highway. Called ActiveHybrid 3, it is expected to go on sale in the fall.

The four-door sedan comes first, but eventually, there will be coupe, convertible and high-performance M3 versions.

First Look: Redesigned 2012 BMW 3-Series

Maker claims new model larger yet lighter, more fuel-efficient.

by on Oct.14, 2011

The 2012 BMW 3-Series is both larger and lighter.

BMW has pulled the covers off its next-generation 3-Series line-up, revealing a new compact line-up that it says is bigger – yet lighter and more fuel-efficient.

The new model features a revised front end that is more in line with its larger lines, including the BMW 5- and 7-Series models.

While final fuel economy numbers haven’t been released, the Bavarian maker anticipates they will be notably better than with comparable models in the outgoing 3-Series line-up – even though the 2012 versions should also deliver better performance.

The 2012 3-Series body grows about 3.7 inches in length, with the wheelbase stretched just under 2 inches.  The front track is 1.5 inches wider, the rear 1.85 inches.  BMW claims that will be particularly obvious to rear-seat passengers, though the trunk is also more capacious.  The average model will be about 88 pounds lighter than the old 2011 3-Series versions.

First Drive: Suzuki Kizashi Sport SLS

Budget sports sedan has exclusivity on its side.

by on May.17, 2011

The Suzuki Kizashi: Exclusive and sporty at a budget price.

Metro Detroiters are known for noticing new metal. Because of the primary industry in this area, it seems that people notice when a new car is rolling along in the lane next to them.

But certain cars seem to attract more attention than others. The Suzuki Kizashi Sport is one of them. Even though this is the second model year for the car, you don’t see a lot of them in the Detroit area because of Suzuki’s low market penetration here. In a week of driving, several drivers craned to get a better look and one man in a parking lot asked about it.

Uncovering Hidden Gems!

So what we have here is a rare, finely styled budget sports sedan that makes onlookers do a double take. Yeah, that’s right, take your see-them-at-every-street-corner 3-Series BMWs and Audi A4s and stick ‘em. The Kizashi has sharp styling that you won’t see every day.

First drive: Cadillac CTS Coupe

New two door is sexiest Cadillac ever.

by on Dec.02, 2010

The Cadillac CTS Coupe has a sexy shape that likes strikingly different compared to the sedan.

A friend from long ago once said that he would always own two-doors. This was long before the days of children, or even taking business associates to lunch, but one has to wonder, did he ever succumb to the convenience of those extra doors?

Cadillac CTS buyers are now confronted by such decisions. If you’re in the market, do you walk past the attractive sedan – not to mention the really useful wagon – and head straight for the sexy new coupe?

Sexy Car Reviews!

And, oh, what a luscious coupe it is. This is no mere two-door version of the CTS. Unlike some two-doors, which have very similar profiles compared to their four-door brethren, nobody will ever have to count door handles to figure out if the CTS they are looking at is a sedan or coupe. Did someone say something about door handles? Unlike other CTS models, the coupe doesn’t even have them. The doors open with the push of a recessed soft-touch button.
