President-elect Donald Trump has been creating quite a buzz during this year's North American International Auto Show.

Forget new product and self-driving cars. The buzz around the North American International Auto Show revolved around President Donald J. Trump’s tweets and claims.

But the automakers were generally digging in their heels and saying they were moving forward with the plans already in the works.

General Motors executives said they automaker planned to go ahead with plans to build the new GMC Terrain unveiled during the auto show in Mexico and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. chief executive Sergio Marchionne said the company was moving forward with plans to build the Jeep Compass in Mexico. Ford CEO Warns of “Huge Impact” to Economy from Trump Trade Plans

Fields says Ford won’t back off of Mexican manufacturing.

Ford CEO Mark Fields during the keynote address for the L.A. Auto Show warned that a hefty tariff on Mexican-built cars could harm the U.S. economy.

Ford Motor CEO Mark Fields warned that President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed trade plans – which include a 35% tariff on motor vehicles imported from Mexico – would have a “huge impact” on the entire American economy, not just the auto industry.

Though Fields said Ford has “had conversations with the transition team” for the incoming president, his comments, made during a keynote speech marking the opening of the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, could escalate a sometimes sharp dispute that began early during the election campaign. It was touched off by Ford’s announcement it would shift small car production from U.S. plants to a new factory in Mexico.

“We’ve got to keep (factories) here. It’s not that hard to do,” then-candidate Trump said during one campaign interview, adding that if Ford and other makers continued to expand in Mexico, “pretty soon all we’re going to have is nursing home jobs.” (more…)

Bill Ford Congratulates Trump While Opening $195M Tech Center in India

Ford offers to work in a spirit of goodwill with new leader.

Ford is investing $195 million into its global technology and business center in Chennai, India.

Just after congratulating Donald Trump on his victory and expressing cautious optimism about working with the president-elect, who plans renegotiate NAFTA and slap a tariff on any vehicles imported from Mexico, Ford announced it was investing $195 million in India.

The automaker is seeking to expand its mobility offerings is plowing nearly $200 million into a new global technology and business center in Chennai, India, which will serve as a base for product development, mobility offerings and services for India and other global markets.

“India is not only a vibrant market for cars and new mobility ideas, it also is rich with talent, technical expertise and ingenuity,” Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford, who was in India for the announcement, said in a statement. (more…)
