Bentley Celebrates a Royal Milestone – in China

Diamond Jubilee Mulsanne, new Continental GT V8 debut at Beijing Motor Show.

by on Apr.23, 2012

We imagine her Royal Highness would approve of the Bentley Diamond Jubilee Mulsanne.

While Queen Elizabeth, to the best of our knowledge, is firmly ensconced in Buckingham Palace, Bentley is celebrating her 60th year on the throne with a big party in China, introducing a special Diamond Jubilee Edition Mulsanne at the Beijing Motor Show.

The maker is also using the biennial gathering to pull the wraps off the new Continental GT V8, the latest model to offer customers a more fuel-efficient alternative to the classic Bentley 12-banger.

Designed by the British maker’s in-house custom operation, Mulliner, a total of 60 Diamond Jubilee Mulsannes will be sold worldwide – each designed to signify a specific year in her reign.

Each features details which “include bespoke embroidery to all four headrests using gold stitching, veneered picnic tables in the rear cabin decorated with a gold overlay depicting a royal carriage used for great occasions of state as well as luxurious, hide cushions featuring the same motif,” says Bentley, adding that, “Two beautiful, highly-polished stainless steel treadplate plaques featuring the famous ‘Bentley Mulliner, England’ script and ‘Diamond Jubilee Edition’ have also been commissioned for these Mulsanne models.”

Bentley Reveals EXP 9 F Luxury SUV

Continental GTC V8 Convertible also debuts in Geneva.

by on Mar.06, 2012

Bentley rolls the EXP 9 F SUV concept into Geneva.

Luxury makers normally dribble out new products from an eyedropper, but Bentley’s got a big year going, as it demonstrated today with the launch of two new offerings at the Geneva Motor Show – notably including the maker’s first-ever sport-utility vehicle.

Technically, the Bentley EXP 9 F is a concept vehicle, but don’t let that fool you.  The British maker’s CEO Wolfgang Durheimer has made it abundantly clear that this project is his top priority and will come to market before the down-market sedan that had been favored by his predecessor.

And with the apparent support of Bentley’s German parent, Volkswagen AG, it is expected to offer a production version of the EXP 9 F with an assortment of drivetrains that could include the marque’s familiar W12, its new V-8 and even a plug-in hybrid.

That new V8, incidentally, is also playing a starring role in Geneva this year – here under the hood of Bentley’s new GTC convertible.  The 8-banger is a key part of the luxury brand’s bid to drive up its less than stellar fuel economy.

Bentley Adds V-8 to Continental Line-Up

Luxury maker aims to boost mileage, maintain performance.

by on Dec.13, 2011

Bentley aims to improve mileage with its new V-8.

It isn’t often one hears a V-8 described as a way to save fuel.  But not many makers today rely solely on V-12 power, so with the addition of new twin-turbo V-8 to its Continental line-up Bentley just might be able to meet its goal of slashing the fuel consumption of its typical vehicle.

The new twin-turbo 4-liter V-8 is expected to continue delivering the sort of performance Bentley buyers continue to demand, the maker says, noting that the new engine will be able to propel a nearly 5,000 machine from 0 to 60 in under 5 seconds.

The engine, shared with the Audi S8 – both makers being part of the Volkswagen empire – will first appear in the coming year under the hood of the Continental GT coupe and GTC convertible models.  While specific fuel economy numbers haven’t been finalized, Bentley is broadly hinting at mileage in the range of 21 mpg Combined.  That might not sound like much in this era but would go a long way towards meeting the ultra-luxury maker’s goal of boosting its Corporate Average Fuel Economy numbers by 40%.
