Bentley Ready to Conquer the World With Bentayga SUV

"The fastest, most powerful, most luxurious, most exclusive SUV in the world.”

by on Sep.09, 2015

The Bentayga will top out at 186 mph, slightly faster than a Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

A good SUV should be able to surmount just about any impediment. The new Bentley Bentayga is showing itself adept at overcoming one of the biggest obstacles of them all, pushing into pricing territory far beyond any SUV currently on the market.

First teased in the form of a concept car more than three years ago, the new Bentley Bentayga will make its formal debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week, but was given an advanced preview of the vehicle Bentley is calling “the fastest, most powerful, most luxurious, most exclusive SUV in the world.”

Pushing the Limits!

Even though it’s still months from reaching Bentley showrooms around the world, the Bentayga is already having a significant impact, helping convince virtually every other premium luxury brand – from Aston Martin to Lamborghini to Rolls-Royce – that they also need to add utility vehicles to their line-ups.

Bentley Aims for Big Growth with Bentayga Launch

British maker hopes to build yet more momentum with production version of EXP 10 Speed 6 concept.

The Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 shown at its debut during the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

With the upcoming launch of its first SUV, the Bentayga, Bentley hopes to not only get a leg up on competitors like Rolls-Royce but also kick off the biggest growth spurt in the British brand’s history.

But Bentley is far from through with the expansion of its line-up, stressed its CEO Wolfgang Durheimer. The brand is readying a business case for its next all-new model, a sports car based on the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept that debuted at the Geneva Motor Show last March.

Global Insight!

“It’s double-digit growth we’re approaching,” said Durheimer during an interview at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance over the weekend. If Bentley meets its target that would be all the more impressive considering it set a sales record last year with its existing line-up.

A Second Bentley Ute? Flood of New Luxury SUVs on the Way

Segment is growing faster than most.

by on May.05, 2015

Even though it hasn't hit dealer showrooms, Bentley is so enamored with its soon-to-be-released SUV, it's thinking of adding a second to its line-up.

Think the idea of a Bentley SUV is hard to fathom: How about two utes from the stately British marque? That’s one of the maker’s two top priorities, according to Bentley CEO Wolfgang Durheimer.

And Bentley is far from alone. Porsche already has two utes in its line-up with the launch of the 2015 Macan. Rolls-Royce has confirmed it has an all-wheel-drive model in development. And even Lamborghini and Aston Martin appear ready to join the fray.

The rapid move into the utility-vehicle segment by some of the world’s most exclusive manufacturers probably shouldn’t come as a surprise. It reflects the overall shift in the automotive market. According to data from IHS Automotive, sport- and crossover-utility vehicles will outsell sedans in the U.S. this year for the first time. (more…)

Porsche Pushes Into Bentley Territory with Panamera Exclusive Series

Limited-edition sedan lands above “base” Continental GT.

by on Oct.31, 2014

The Porsche Panamera Exclusive Series is creating a little sibling rivalry with the Bentley Continental GT.

When it comes to the upper reaches of the luxury car market, it’s getting hard to tell the players without a scorecard. And that means some sibling brands are suddenly turning into rivals.

The latest example comes with the unveiling of the new Porsche Panamera Exclusive Series. While it’s not the most expensive model the German maker has ever offered – at barely a third the price of the 918 Spyder ultracar – the limited-edition sedan lands well above the “base” Bentley Continental GT and not much below the British maker’s top-line Mulsanne model.

Bentley Goes Electric at Beijing Show with Plug-In Mulsanne Concept

Luxury makers face pressure to go greener.

by on Apr.21, 2014

Bentley shows off its plug-in hybrid system.

China’s long economic expansion has made it one of the most promising markets for luxury carmakers, with demand for high-line vehicles soon expected to exceed that in U.S. Even the most expensive brands have been growing at a blinding rate, right along with the rest of the Chinese market.

But China’s central government is putting pressure on carmakers – particularly those producing the most powerful and fuel-inefficient products — to develop more electric and hybrid vehicles because of growing concerns about the country’s endemic air pollution problems.

Electrifying News!

That’s encouraged Bentley to introduce its first-ever plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle, or PHEV, at this year’s Beijing Motor Show. The good news for potential buyers, stressed according to Wolfgang Schreilber, chairman and chief executive officer of Bentley Motors, is that the plug-in version of the flagship Mulsanne is both more powerful and even more efficient than the conventional, gas-powered model.

Bentley Adding Coupe-Like Sedan, According to Reports

New four-door would be ready by 2018.

by on Sep.25, 2013

Bentley's SUV concept, the EXP-F9, is coming to life and may be joined by a new coupe-like sedan.

There was a time when Bentleys were little more than rebadged versions of old partner Rolls-Royce models. But, in recent years, the British maker has been generating significant demand with an expanded and updated line-up of offerings such as the new Flying Spur and the big Mulsanne.

Now, it seems, Bentley’s line-up is set to get significantly bigger. As we’ve already reported, the maker is moving ahead on the development of its first-ever luxury SUV, a model that will be based on the EXP 9F concept vehicle the world got a first glimpse of in Geneva at the 2012 Motor Show. But could there be still more to come?

A Safe Source!

Apparently, yes. Reports from Europe suggesting the next model will be a coupe-like sedan – think Mercedes-Benz CLS on an even grander scale – due out in 2018, according to the U.K.’s Car magazine. (more…)

Bentley SUV Gets Green Light

Sales launch set for 2016.

by on Jul.23, 2013

A sketch of the planned Bentley SUV skips some of the more controversial details of the 2012 concept vehicle.

True, it is far from the biggest surprise but Bentley has now given the formal go-ahead for production of its new premium-luxury SUV, the as yet-unnamed addition to its line-up slated to reach showrooms around the world in 2016.

The pet project of former Bentley boss Wolfgang Durheimer, the new ute will be based on the EXP 9 F concept vehicle revealed during the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.  In a statement, the British subsidiary of Volkswagen AG announced plans to invest more than 800 million British pounds – or more than $1.2 billion – over the next three years for “the development of new models.”

In an exclusive conversation with, the British marque’s technology chief confirmed that Bentley will go into production with a long-rumored gas-electric driveline.

From Bentley to Audi, Durheimer Has Big Plans

Luxury SUV, due in 2015, to serve as his legacy.

by on Aug.23, 2012

Bentley CEO Woflgang Durheimer prepares to move on for a new job at Audi.

In the scheme of things, Wolfgang Durheimer wasn’t at Bentley all that long but he will be leaving a legacy that will see the ultra-luxury maker continue to undergo major changes for years to come. That includes its controversial entry into the SUV segment.

Now, Durheimer sets off for Audi, another premium brand in the Volkswagen AG empire – where observers expect him to again leave an indelible stamp.

As the result of an unexpected, corporate-wide management shake-up , Durheimer will leave Bentley next month to become the R&D chief at Audi – a job similar to what he’d previously held with Porsche.  His hope, he said during an interview, is to have “made Bentley sustainable for the future.”

The key to that, he contends, is the launch of the British maker’s third product line, an all-new sport-utility vehicle, which Durheimer promises will be, “the most expensive SUV in the world,” with an expected base price of between 170,000 and 200,000 Euros, or roughly $220,000 to $260,000 at current exchange rates.
