BMW’s Concept X7 Joining Wave of Big, Bigger, Biggest Luxury SUVs

Lexus, others expected to push utes further up-market.

by on Dec.01, 2017

Expect to see a production version of the BMW Concept X7 sometime next year.

Few automakers had a bigger presence at the L.A. Auto Show’s media preview this week than BMW, its stand filled with an array of new production vehicles, concepts and even a battery-electric motorcycle.

The biggest of those products was the Concept X7, a massive sport-utility vehicle making its North American debut. Though a prototype for now, BMW officials made it clear that a production model is already in the works.

Product News!

BMW isn’t alone. While Lexus used the Los Angeles show to preview a stretched version of its midsize RX utility vehicle, expect a much more lavish, full-size crossover model to follow. Where sedans like the BMW 7-Series long served as brand flagships, large utes are rapidly taking over, even Rolls-Royce developing one for its own line-up. (more…)

SUVs Rule at the NY Auto Show

Utes of every size and price range roll into the Big Apple.

by on Mar.28, 2016

Acura unveiled the latest update of its best-selling model, the 2017 MDX, in New York.

When Mazda pulled the wraps off the new MX-5 Miata RF, a new version of its 2-seat roadster, on Thursday, it was one of the rare exceptions at a New York International Auto Show marked by the debut of a score of new sport- and crossover-utility vehicles.

In a variety of shapes and sizes – as well as a broad range of prices — they can be found in every corner of the Jacob Javits Convention Center. And, if anything, industry officials made it clear they’ll have still more utes to unveil in the near future.

Auto Show News!

“It appears there is no end in sight to the remarkable growth of the crossover market, here and around the world,” said Carlos Ghosn, the CEO of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, as he opened up the auto show’s annual media preview with a keynote speech.

First Look: 2017 Maserati Levante

Premium SUV set to offer an array of engine options.

by on Feb.22, 2016

The production 2017 Maserati Levante.

With the Geneva Motor Show launch of the new 2017 Levante next month, Maserati will become the newest entrant into the super-premium SUV market, a segment that is set to see an explosion of new product over the next several years.

Originally introduced as the Kubang concept vehicle at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, the idea was to borrow from the best of the Fiat Chrysler family, lifting bits of the familiar Grand Cherokee platform and pairing it was a Ferrari-derived V-8.

Auto Show News!

“At a technical level, the Levante’s chassis is designed to combine the outstanding on-road performance typical of every Maserati with unrivalled handling even on very low-grip surfaces and an excellent off-road performance and ride,” Maserati declared in a statement accompanying these images.

Prepping for First SUV, Rolls-Royce Begins Testing New Aluminum Spaceframe

All new models, including Cullinan, will adopt new platform after 2018.

by on Jan.07, 2016

A teaser image from Rolls-Royce shows a mule being used to test the maker's new utility vehicle.

There has always been something a bit anachronistic about Rolls-Royce, retro if you prefer. The big grille, classic hood ornament and, oh, so much mass.

But Rolls is ready to go on a diet. Confirming earlier plans, the British maker now says it is already testing an all-new, aluminum spaceframe architecture that will serve as the basis for all new models, starting in 2018. Among the list of upcoming products to get the lightweight touch: the new off-roader that Rolls officials are referring to as Project Cullinan.

Best Cars for Tailgating

For Serious Tailgaters, the Car’s as Important as the Game Itself

by on Oct.23, 2015

The extended Janisse family chowing down at a Michigan State tailgate party.

He may live on the other side of the country these days, but Steve Janisse tries to get to East Lansing, Michigan as often as possible to catch the Michigan State Spartans in action.

It’s a tradition dating back to his days as an MSU student, and while it’s too long to drive in from California, he’s stayed in touch with old college friends who have made a tradition of arriving hours early to park and party. Tailgating is a pastime repeated around the country as football season gets underway, but to do it right takes more than just a ticket for the game and a parking pass. It also takes the right sort of car.

Get in the Game!

“The tailgating is almost as much fun as the game itself,” says Janisse, a one-time auto executive who now works as a consultant in the entertainment industry. “But you want something like an SUV or a pickup that you can open up in back.”

Bentley Bentayga Offering World’s Most Expensive In-Car Clock

Queen Elizabeth II expected to take delivery of first Bentley SUV.

by on Sep.18, 2015

The new Bentley Bentayga will offer an optional clock as expensive as the SUV itself.

If you’re going to build the world’s most expensive SUV, it might seem logical to offer the world’s most expensive in-car clock, as well.

At least, that’s what Bentley plans to do when it starts rolling out the new Bentayga in a few months. The full-size ute, with its leather and wood-lined cabin will start at $229,100 in the U.S. But you can bump that up with a variety of options – including the Breitling Mulliner Turbillon clock.

The Last Word!

While a final price hasn’t been set, it’s expected to come in at around £150,000, or roughly $234,000 – which could make it more expensive than the “base” Bentley Bentayga. The maker justifies the price by explaining the clock has “the most complex of watch mechanisms.”

Debuts to Watch at Frankfurt Motor Show

From ragtop microcars to the world’s most expensive SUV.

by on Sep.14, 2015

The exterior of the 2016 Audi A4 doesn't change much - but there's more here than meets the eye.

With automotive sales and profits soaring, the industry mood is jubilant heading into the biennial Frankfurt Motor Show – and that should translate into good news for car buyers not only in Europe but also the rest of the world.

The first big show of the 2016 model-year is expected to see dozens of new models make their world debut during the two-day media preview. Not surprisingly, some of the biggest news will come from German makers like Audi, which has erected a three-story building of its own at the sprawling Frankfurt Messe, and BMW, which has set up a quarter-mile test track inside its own hall.

The Leader in Global Automotive News!

Among the German makers, “The coffers are full and confidence levels are high — as, it seems, is the desire to one-up neighbors and closest competitors on home turf,” said Tim Urquhart, an analyst with IHS Automotive. (more…)

Bentley Ready to Conquer the World With Bentayga SUV

"The fastest, most powerful, most luxurious, most exclusive SUV in the world.”

by on Sep.09, 2015

The Bentayga will top out at 186 mph, slightly faster than a Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

A good SUV should be able to surmount just about any impediment. The new Bentley Bentayga is showing itself adept at overcoming one of the biggest obstacles of them all, pushing into pricing territory far beyond any SUV currently on the market.

First teased in the form of a concept car more than three years ago, the new Bentley Bentayga will make its formal debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week, but TheDetroitBureau.com was given an advanced preview of the vehicle Bentley is calling “the fastest, most powerful, most luxurious, most exclusive SUV in the world.”

Pushing the Limits!

Even though it’s still months from reaching Bentley showrooms around the world, the Bentayga is already having a significant impact, helping convince virtually every other premium luxury brand – from Aston Martin to Lamborghini to Rolls-Royce – that they also need to add utility vehicles to their line-ups.

Tinseltown event to bring 50 unveilings, 30 world debuts.

by on Sep.04, 2015

A first glimpse of the direction Hyundai will take with the next-generation Elantra.

The annual auto show season is just getting underway, with manufacturers set to kick things off in Frankfurt, Germany barely two weeks from now. Then the automotive circus will move on to Los Angeles, the first of the big U.S. extravaganzas.

And it looks like the 2015 L.A. Auto Show could be a big one, at least based on preliminary numbers suggesting there will be 50 vehicle unveilings, including 30 world debuts.

Auto Show News!

With the Frankfurt Motor Show still yet to begin, most automakers are being tight-lipped about Tinseltown plans, but Infiniti has already confirmed it will reveal the new QX30 – barely two months after showing its near-twin, the Q30, in Germany. Hyundai, meanwhile, will be on hand to unveil the next-generation Elantra line.

Bentley Aims for Big Growth with Bentayga Launch

British maker hopes to build yet more momentum with production version of EXP 10 Speed 6 concept.

by on Aug.17, 2015

The Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 shown at its debut during the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

With the upcoming launch of its first SUV, the Bentayga, Bentley hopes to not only get a leg up on competitors like Rolls-Royce but also kick off the biggest growth spurt in the British brand’s history.

But Bentley is far from through with the expansion of its line-up, stressed its CEO Wolfgang Durheimer. The brand is readying a business case for its next all-new model, a sports car based on the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept that debuted at the Geneva Motor Show last March.

Global Insight!

“It’s double-digit growth we’re approaching,” said Durheimer during an interview at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance over the weekend. If Bentley meets its target that would be all the more impressive considering it set a sales record last year with its existing line-up.
