First Drive: 2014 Fiat 500L

Big things come in small packages.

by on Jun.17, 2013

Fiat Lands its Second Model, the 500L.

After a painfully slow start, Fiat has gained significant market momentum in recent months as it has delivered a growing range of new products to its U.S. showrooms, including the new 500e battery-electric vehicle.

But there’s only so far you can go no matter how many variants you come up with off the same minicar platform and Fiat’s U.S. planners are well aware that the most common reason potential buyers turn elsewhere is because the 500 coupe is simply too small for the majority of buyers.

No wonder, then, that the maker is investing so much time and effort into the launch of the 2014 Fiat 500L, the all-new people-mover that is just beginning to roll into American showrooms – or “studios” as the Italian automaker prefers to call them.

First Drive: 2014 Mercedes-Benz E350 Sedan

E-Class loyalists rejoice.

by on Jun.13, 2013

The ninth-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Clas debuts with the introduction of the E350 sedan and wagon.

When it comes to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan, familiarity breeds anything but contempt.  By far the most popular midsize luxury sedan in the market – indeed, in just about any market in the world – the midsize Mercedes has good reason to claim an intensely loyal following.

Traditionally, while it may not have been the sportiest sedan in its segment, or the most stylish, it offers a mix of performance, features and grounded, Teutonic design that turned heads and led buyers to open their wallets, generation after generation.

And now, the German maker is hoping to maintain its standing with an all-new ninth-generation E-Class that takes a step beyond the simple update many had expected.  To get a better feel for just how much things have changed, we spent a day driving the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E350 sedan which, along with the E-wagon, is the first of a wide range of variants we’ll be seeing over the coming months.

2014 Chevy Impala Fires on All Four Cylinders

A big car with a small appetite for fuel.

by on Jun.10, 2013

Despite its size, the 2014 Chevy Impala's new 2.5-liter I-4 can deliver up to 31 mpg Highway.

Long known – and largely ignored – for its bland, forgettable styling and driving manners only a rental car customer could appreciate, General Motors delivered a real surprise with the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet impala.

As we discovered during our first drive of the sedan earlier this year, the new Impala is not just stylish and well-equipped but also a lot of fun to drive, not something you might expect from a 3,800-pound, full-size 4-door.  Of course, it helped that the launch version of the Impala featured a peppy 3.6-liter V-6 turning out 305 horsepower and 264 pound-feet through a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Geared Up for News!

In decades past, that might have been precisely what the market wanted, but not in an era of $4-a-gallon gas.  Even big sedans like Impala now need to offer something smaller and more fuel-efficient under the hood. And the good news is the 2014 Chevy Impala has just the option, a new 2.5-liter inline-four that’s also matched up to a six-speed automatic.

First Drive: Chevrolet Cruze Turbo Diesel

Great mileage, good performance – but is it worth the price?

by on May.24, 2013

At 46 mpg highway, the new Chevy Cruze Turbo Diesel gives even hybrids a run for their (gas) money.

It looks like your run-of-the-mill Chevrolet Cruze, albeit with a nicely loaded interior. But it only takes a second, after you slip behind the wheel and turn the key, to recognize something’s different.

There’s that chattering sound from under the hood that tells you this is the new 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Turbo Diesel, the first time any of General Motors’ U.S. brands has put an “oil burner” under the hood of a passenger car since 1986. There’s good reason why it’s taken so long considering the disastrous diesels it produced in the mid-‘80s, models so bad they almost single-handedly destroyed the American diesel market.

But it’s a new world. Technologies such as high-pressure injection and turbocharging have transformed the modern diesel, making them smooth, quiet, quick and clean.  Or, at least, that’s what we’ve experienced from other manufacturers, such as Volkswagen, Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. So TheDetroitBureau.com went to Hell and back – Hell, Michigan, that is, to see if the new Cruze Turbo Diesel was anywhere near as good as the competition.

First Drive: 2014 Lexus IS

This time it’s more than just plain vanilla.

by on May.23, 2013

The new sedan - the IS 250 shown here - adopts the Lexus spindle grille design.

It wasn’t all that long ago when Lexus dominated the U.S. luxury market, but despite its continuing strength in quality and customer service surveys, the Toyota luxury brand has been losing momentum to European makers BMW and Mercedes-Benz, never mind upstarts such as Audi.

It doesn’t help that the buzz around its vehicles has shrunk to something like a very faint hum, its sales more and more dependent on its primary crossover vehicle, the RX.  While that may be propping up the numbers, it also might trigger a sense of déjà vu for the sepia-tinged era when station wagons ruled the road.

Company officials, notably including Toyota President Akio Toyoda are clearly worried and looking for ways to kick-start the brand. Among other things, they’ve been talking a lot about passion, these days, something that Lexus translates as the more sporty design language that one finds on the newly restyled Lexus IS.  The good news is that with this entry-level sedan beauty is more than skin deep, the 2014 IS reminding us why Lexus soared to the top of the U.S. luxury market in the first place.

First Drive: 2014 Chevrolet Impala

Chevy proves there's plenty of life left in the full-size sedan.

by on Mar.18, 2013

The 2014 Chevrolet Impala adopts a more modern design theme with its coupe-like roofline.

In the years before trucks and sport-utility vehicles came to dominate the Chevrolet lineup, the Impala was regarded as Chevy’s flagship since the Corvette was in a class all by itself.

The big sedan has lost much of its luster over the years, General Motors’ largest brand shifting focus to those higher-profit trucks, SUVs and newer crossovers. But the surge in fuel prices over the last few years has many motorists shifting back to the passenger car side of the market and now Chevy is hoping to rebuild Impala’s reputation, which has been diminished by years of neglect.

Your Auto Review Source!

The maker generated plenty of buzz with the unveiling of the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Impala, which adopts a sleek new, coupe-like shape and introduces a variety of new features long absent from Chevy’s full-size offering.

But the question is how it stacks up against some tough new competitors, notably including an equally all-new Avalon sedan from Toyota. For that, TheDetroitBureau.com headed to San Diego to take our first drive in the new Chevy flagship.

First Drive: 2014 Acura RLX

A worthy flagship.

by on Mar.01, 2013

With the 2014 RLX launch Acura finally gets a real flagship sedan.

When it was launched, more than a quarter-century ago, Acura transformed the way Americans thought about Japanese cars, proving that the Asians could challenge the well-established European and domestic luxury brands. But the initial success of the Honda Motor Co. subsidiary proved far too fleeting and in recent years, Acura has lagged in the back of the premium pack.

One can come up with any number of reasons to explain Acura’s malaise: the switch from well-respected model names like Legend to forgettable alphanumeric alternatives; some strange styling decisions, such as the awkward chrome grille critics deride as the “beak”; increased competition, especially from newer Japanese brands – but perhaps the start of the decline was the model that replaced the once-formidable Legend, the Acura RL.

Your Auto Review Source!

It wasn’t a bad car.  Well, not all that bad. It just wasn’t the sort of product to provide a halo around your brand – even if you could remember its name. Now, to be honest, there was more than a bit of disappointment when Acura announced it would introduce an all-new flagship model but not bring back the Legend nameplate. The question is whether the all-new 2014 Acura RLX delivers what the Honda luxury brand needs, whatever you call it?

First Drive: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel

Diesel power to the people.

by on Feb.25, 2013

Jeep makes some unexpectedly significant updatest to the Grand Cherokee for 2014.

It wasn’t all that long ago that the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee landed among the three finalists for North American Truck of the Year. And though the SUV didn’t win the coveted trophy it clearly clicked with potential buyers, helping drive a dramatic increase in sales

So, as the 2014 model-year approaches, it might seem like there’d be little reason to pay much attention when Jeep announced it is updating the Grand Cherokee once again. Three years in, that’s normally the time manufacturers come up with minimal cosmetic and technical changes that the average buyers would barely even notice.

Be in the Know!

Not in this case.  While true, Jeep hasn’t gone back to square one, there are some surprisingly significant changes – from the basic electric architecture to the powertrain options, as well as exterior design details — coming for the 2014 model-year that justify a closer look by reviewers and a serious re-think by potential buyers.

First Drive:2013 Audi S8

A gold medal contender.

by on Feb.19, 2013

Audi delivers a new flagship with the 2013 S8.

The Auto Union was an amalgamation of four German automobile manufacturers, founded during the Great Depression. The company eventually evolved into present day Audi, and the four rings that adorn the grilles of the brand’s modern offerings represent the four original companies of Auto Union: Audi, Wanderer, DKW and Horch.

Each company brought specific technology to the Union, and today Audi is widely known for building All-Wheel Drive cars that feature safety, prodigious performance and superior technology – as well as for its benchmark interiors.

Stay on Top!

When you look at the four-ringed Audi grille, you can’t help but compare it to the Olympic symbol — five interlaced rings.  For 2013, just imagine that the Auto Union had an additional company–adding that fifth ring, as the all-new Audi S8 is truly a gold medal contender.

First Drive: 2014 Kia Forte

The art of making an affordable, fun-to-drive small car.

by on Feb.13, 2013

The look of the 2014 Kia Forte sedan builds on the maker's now-familiar tiger-nose design.

Car making is an art.

But it seldom reveals the kind of breakthrough genius or inspiration that infused, say, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Instead the creativity and improvement seem to come in increments.

The new 2014 Kia Forte is a case in point on how well-thought out incremental changes can improve a vehicle substantially.

Sitting on an all-new chassis that is longer, wider and lower than the previous-generation Forte, the updated version of the Forte delivers slightly better performance and some incremental improvements in the suspension and steering that make it more fun to drive out on the open road. It’s also roomier and a lot more pleasant to look at.

Your Auto Source!

And that we can credit to Peter Schreyer, the maker’s new president but, more importantly, one of the industry’s most creative designers.  His arrival at Kia in 2006 marked a grand transformation of a brand whose products could then best be described as cheap and cheerful. The former Audi styling chief introduced Kia’s distinctive “tiger-nose” theme that today positions it as one of the industry’s design trend-setters.
