Volvo Concept XC Coupe, Ford Mustang Win Auto Show Design Awards

The 2015 Ford Mustang at its global debut.

The new Ford Mustang and the Volvo Concept XC Coupe took honors as the best designed production model and concept vehicle at the North American International Auto Show.

They were among scores of new products unveiled during the annual Detroit event’s media preview that faced scrutiny by 30 current and retired chief automotive designers from around the world.

While fuel economy, performance and digital safety and infotainment systems have become increasingly important to buyers, studies routinely show that design remains one of the most critical factors, especially when shoppers are first figuring out which models to put on their shopping list.  And, if anything, that has triggered what many observers are calling a new golden era of automotive styling.

The new Kia Rio lands a double accolade.

Kia, the ambitious South Korean automaker, has walked off with two major awards in the U.S. and Germany for the design of the subcompact Rio with its sculpted, sloping shoulder lines and wedge-shaped exteriors.

The first of the two new awards came from the first IDEA Design Award in the Transportation category, the second trophy a highly coveted Red Dot Design award.

The IDEA Award is handed out by the Industrial Design Society of America and recognizes designs that affect a person’s quality of life and economy in 18 categories, including Transportation, Design, Technology, and Design Strategy.


Lexus LF-LC, Ford Fusion Win Auto Show Design Awards

Tough competition as more than 50 models debut.

Lexus unveiled the now award-winning LF-LC concept at the Detroit Auto Show Monday.

The new Ford Fusion and the Lexus LF-LC took honors as the best production and best concept cars in the annual Eyes on Design Awards at the 2012 North American International Auto Show.

It wasn’t an easy trophy to take home, more than 50 concept and production vehicles debuting during the show’s two days of media previews.

Good design has long been a competitive advantage in the auto industry.  But it is becoming increasingly important in today’s automotive market, said Freeman Thomas, an advanced designer with Ford Motor Co.  It is being credited with helping makers as diverse as Ford, Audi and Hyundai gain ground in an industry just recovering from one of its worst recessions in decades.

“It’s the difference between a short-order cook and a great chef,” said Thomas.
