November Auto Sales Hit Highest Mark in 10 Years

Black Friday, low gas prices work in concert to drive buyers.

GM sales were up 6% in November, including Cadillac's Escalade, which saw sales jump 75% on a year-over-year basis.

The combination of lower gasoline prices rising, rising consumer confidence and a strong end-of-the-month push from Black Friday helped raise November new vehicle sales to their highest level in more than a decade.

Chrysler, General Motors, Volkswagen, Toyota and Audi all posted sales gains while Nissan and Ford reported a small declines.

BMW, Mercedes Slugging It Out for Sales Title

Duel over luxury crown headed for photo finish.

BMW is holding a slim lead over rival Mercedes-Benz in the U.S. luxury market.

BMW and Mercedes-Benz are locked in a battle royal for the sales crown in the prosperous market for luxury cars in the U.S. BMW held the title for the two previous years, but one of the two has been the leader since 2011: the last year Lexus held the crown.

“One of the noteworthy facts in the October U.S. new vehicle sales results is that BMW now leads its archrival Mercedes-Benz by just 5,389 sales through the first ten months of this year,” IHS Automotive Analyst Tom Libby said.

“With such a small gap in sales through 10 months, the two makes will most likely use marketing tools extensively through the end of the year, including numerous types of incentives, to gain an edge.” (more…)

Trucks, Crossovers, Luxury Cars Lead Strong Sales

Honda's CR-V helped the Japanese maker to a double-digit sales jump in September.

Strong sales of luxury vehicles, trucks and crossovers continued to pace the auto industry’s performance during September with several carmakers, including Acura, Audi, Chrysler, General Motors, Honda, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz and Subaru all reporting double-digit increases as the seasonally adjusted annual rate of sales exceeded 16.4 million units.

Larry Dominque, True Car executive vice president, said what was particularly impressive was that the industry managed to continued to grow in September without increasing incentives.

“The daily sales rate is up about 5%,” Dominque noted, “while the ratio of incentives to transaction prices has remained very stable indicating the market is basically healthy.” (more…)

GM Enjoys Double-Digit Sales Increase in September

Sales of the 2015 Chevrolet Suburban were up 50% in September, helping the maker to a 19% overall increase, including 17% at the retail level.

General Motors, Nissan and Audi all reported major sales gains during September as sales of new vehicles remained strong. However, with its stock price under pressure, Ford Motor Co. reported that its sales – and marketshare – continued to shrink during the past month.

Reid Bigland, head of U.S. Sales, said Chrysler, Jeep, Ram Truck and Fiat brands each posted year-over-year sales gains in September as Chrysler Group’s overall sales increased by 19%.

Jeep’s 47% increase was the largest sales gain of any Chrysler Group brand and its best-ever sales in the month of September. Chrysler Group extended its streak of year-over-year sales gains to 54 consecutive months. (more…)

Detroit Automakers Lead July Sales Increases

The new Jeep Wrangler posted a 14% increase last month for its best-ever July sales result.

With Detroit’s automakers leading the way, new car sales remained very strong during July thanks to an improving economy, ample financing and the appeal of new products that have given automakers a major lift.

Transaction prices also continued to exceed $32,000 per unit as consumers and automakers remained willing to take on more debt for a new vehicle and carmakers and banks remained more than willing to underwrite it. Analysts said.

VW CEO Martin Winterkorn wants to balance profitability and aggressive growth going forward.

The world’s second-largest automaker beat expectations with a strong second quarter profit, up 14.1%, despite a decline in revenues.

The Thursday release of Volkswagen AG’s earnings revealed that its biggest luxury line, Audi AG, helped offset some problems at its namesake brand. The report came as VW begins a major effort to shift its focus from raw growth to a more profitable expansion plan, with Chief Executive Officer Martin Winterkorn planning to cut costs and boost productivity.

“In light of the continued strong competitive pressures, the tense situation in some emerging economies and the fundamental technical and economic changes happening in our industry, we are working hard to create all the conditions we need today to ensure success tomorrow,” the CEO said in a statement accompanying the earnings release.

VW earned 3.25 billion Euros, or $4.35 billion, during the second quarter, up from 2.85 billion during the same period a year ago. The consensus of 13 industry analysts polled by the Bloomberg news service had anticipated earnings of 3.31 billion Euros.

Jeep Wranger saw its best May sales ever last month. The Jeep brand overall was up 58% during the period.

Buoyed by fantastic weather and a fifth weekend for dealers to move metal, new vehicle sales during demonstrated renewed strength in May.

Those factors helped Jeep post its best monthly sales in history and led General Motors to predict it would gain marketshare this year.

Audi Takes Global Luxury Sales Lead

But BMW isn’t ready to concede defeat.

The redesigned Audi TT makes its Geneva debut.

Two months does not a year make, but in a significant breakthrough Audi AG is claiming to hold the lead in the hotly contested global luxury car maket.

The largest of the luxury brands of Volkswagen AG, Audi has been gaining ground on traditional rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz in recent years, and is hoping to solidify its first-place position with a flood of new products planned for the coming year, an assortment of which were previewed at the Geneva Motor Show last week.

A Sporting Choice!

For the first two months of 2014, Audi delivered 242,000 vehicles, giving it a modest 383-unit lead over BMW.  It fell 429 cars short of its Bavarian rival during the same period last year.

And Audi intends to widen the lead, Chief Executive Officer Rupert Stadler said Tuesday at the brand’s headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany, promising that, “We will increase deliveries in all regions of the world, including Europe.”

But Audi’s rivals aren’t ready to concede defeat.

Buyers Showing Love for All-Wheel-Drive Vehicles

Subaru's sales jump this year is helping to push sales of all-wheel-drive-equipped vehicles to new highs.

With nasty winter weather dominating the headlines the past few years, it would seem people are buying vehicles better equipped to handle the elements: sales of all-wheel-drive vehicles have risen five percentage points in five years.

Nearly one-third – 31.3% – of new vehicles sold through September were equipped with either all- or four-wheel drive. This is up from 26.3% during the same nine-month span of 2008, according to data from Polk, an automotive research firm in Southfield, Mich.

While Mother Nature may have played a small role in the increase, more likely it’s the rising sales of crossovers and small sport-utilities as well as companies that feature AWD vehicles, such as Audi and Subaru, that have spurred the change. (more…)

Audi of America's Scott Keogh said the maker plans to continue setting sales records in the U.S.

Audi plans to remain vigilant about not allowing its dazzling sales gains achieved during the last four years slip away anytime soon despite the rising competitive pressures in the luxury segment.

Audi of America President Scott Keogh confirmed Audi expects to set a new annual U.S. record that will exceed 150,000 units this year. By topping that figure, Audi will set its fourth consecutive full-year record and nearly double the 77,917 vehicles sold less than a decade ago.
