Audi Bringing All-New Q7 to Detroit Auto Show

German maker’s oldest model finally getting a remake.

by on Dec.12, 2014

The new Audi Q7 will shed more than 700 pounds.

Among the estimated 45 world debuts scheduled for the upcoming Detroit Auto Show, expect a big one from Audi – quite literally, as it plans to reveal the replacement for the biggest, and oldest, model in its line-up.

The Q7 SUV has undergone only the most modest of tweaks since its original debut back in 2006, an unusually lengthy wait considering the ever-faster pace of today’s auto industry.

The Last Word!

Audi apparently intends to address some of the key complaints about the Q7, which include its unimpressive fuel economy, as well as its poor space utilization. Among other things, the big ute will drop more than 700 pounds of mass. It will, meanwhile, get a new plug-in hybrid system which Audi claims will deliver as much as 138 mpg.

First Look: Lamborghini Urus Super-Ute

Expect to see Lambo take the LB736 racing.

by on Apr.23, 2012

Lamborghini is going off-road with the Urus.

Four years after hinting it had an SUV in mind with the Estoque concept vehicle, Lamborghini is indeed getting into the game.  After a few feints and dodges, the maker has officially confirmed that its oft-discussed third model line will be a sport-ute known internally as the LB736.

But eager buyers will get to know the new offering – which debuted today at the Beijing Motor Show – as the Lamborghini Urus.  And, yes, that’s in form with Lambo naming tradition, Urus a type of bull.  No, not that kind, it’s the ursine equivalent of a draft horse.  And the Italian maker is deadly serious about the launch of the new SUV.

Lambo styling chief Filippo Perini has come up with a design that’s distinctly different from the other SUV offerings from the other Volkswagen AG luxury brands, notably the Audi Q7 and the, er, controversial EXP 9 F concept from Bentley revealed at the Geneva Motor Show last month.

“The Urus is a very concrete idea for the future of Lamborghini – as a third model line and as the perfect complement to our super sports cars,” said Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. “SUVs stand for freedom and emotion. SUVs make up one of the most successful market segments worldwide. The Urus is the most extreme interpretation of the SUV idea; it is the Lamborghini of the SUVs.”

Audi Planning to Slash Q7 Weight by 770 Pounds

German maker the latest to target big weight cuts.

by on Sep.21, 2011

Audi turned to diesel power to help boost the mileage of the big Q7 but now it wants to address the problem by slashing the ute's weight.

Audi plans to trim the weight of its hefty Q7 sport-utility vehicle by as much 770 pounds.  The maker is just the latest to announce plans to significantly cut the heft of its future products.

Ford Motor Co., for example, hopes to trim the weight on future product lines by as much as 20%, product chief Derrick Kuzak recently told, while makers as diverse as Nissan and Land Rover are also setting aggressive weight targets as part of their efforts to meet tough new fuel economy standards.

Audi’s planned diet for the roughly 5,700-pound Q7 would amount to a significant 15% cut in weight, according to a report in Car & Driver magazine.

Meanwhile, the Volkswagen Touareg – which shares many of the same underlying components as the Q7 – has already dropped about 400 pounds with the current, second-generation model, as has the other Q7 sibling, Porsche’s Cayenne.
