Volkswagen officials show off the maker's new battery electric minivan concept, BUDD-e, earlier this year.

Since the scandal surrounding its diesel engines broke, Volkswagen has been pushing its electrification program to the fore to show its commitment to green technologies. Skeptics wondered how serious the maker was.

Apparently giga-serious.

Audi Shoots for the Moon

German automaker outlines tech goals – including new moon mission.

Audi's U.S. CEO Scott Keogh, left, and Gene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon, talk about Audi during the Detroit Auto Show.

It weighs just 75 pounds, boasts wheels made of a titanium-aluminum alloy, and its “sunroof” is an array of solar panels. The little buggy rolling around the Audi stand at the North American International Auto Show isn’t nearly as sleek and sexy as the rest of the vehicles Audi has on display. But it doesn’t have to be, not when it comes time to start rolling around the surface of the moon.

The German maker is lending its financial support to a team of scientists chasing the latest Xprize. They hope to launch their mobile lab next year atop an Indian rocket, and if all goes well, it will travel nearly a quarter-million miles before landing on the Taurus Littrow Valley – which just happened to be the last place an Apollo moon mission landed 43 years ago.

German maker says battery prices are plunging; will make EVs cost competitive.

The Audi e-tron Quattro SUV Concept will be followed by a production model around 2018.

For now, it’s just a show car, drawing curious gawkers to the maker’s stand at the L.A. Auto Show, but in less than three years, Audi intends to have a production version of the e-tron Quattro Concept in showrooms around the world.

And with a range of more than 300 miles, the German maker is betting the electric SUV will charge up consumers, becoming a mainstream rather than niche product. The added range is just one of the positive factors, however. Audi is expecting a sharp decrease in the cost of batteries by the time the production SUV comes to market in 2018.

And, with a slew of additional e-tron models, both plug-in hybrids and pure battery-electric vehicles, or BEVs, in the works, Audi planners predict the technology could soon account for as much as a quarter of their U.S. sales. (more…)
