Latest Audi Prologue Concept Hints at New Avant Model to Come

Show car also features a new virtual concept, and an all-knowing “butler.”

by on Feb.25, 2015

The Audi Prologue Avant concept debuting at the Geneva Motor Show is not quite a wagon or is it really a coupe.

When Audi revealed its show-stopping Prologue concept vehicle at the Los Angeles Auto Show last November, styling chief Marc Lichte suggested it was “a teaser for our next generation A6, A7 and A8” models.

Audi will be dropping still more hints of its future design direction next week when it pulls the wraps of the Prologue Avant concept during a news conference at the Geneva Motor Show. Not quite a wagon, clearly not a sedan, the distinctive five-door is intended to create a unique and dynamic new design form all its own.

“The Audi prologue Avant is progressive, emotion-filled and versatile,” said Audi tech chief Ulrich Hackenberg, in a statement. “With our show car for Geneva, we now translate the design language of the Audi prologue into a new, dynamic and stretched form. We are merging it with a concept of high variability.” (more…)

Audi Pairs Hydrogen and Plug-in Power to Create A7 h-tron

Dual power offers performance and other pluses.

by on Nov.20, 2014

Audi's A7 h-tron Sportback Quattro may be the best of both possible green worlds: a plug-in hybrid that uses a hydrogen fuel cell.

There’s a war of words underway between proponents of battery power and those who think the fuel-cell is the future of green technology. Audi is suggesting both might find common ground in their effort to replace the conventional internal combustion engine.

The luxury arm of Volkswagen AG used the Los Angeles Auto Show to reveal its unusual A7 h-tron Sportback Quattro. The coupe-like sedan pairs a fuel-cell stack with a plug-in hybrid system to create a vehicle that produces zero emissions yet also can deliver sporty performance.

Edgy Audi Prologue Reveals New Design Language

Concept will serve as theme for next A6, A7 and A8 models.

by on Nov.19, 2014

Audi's Prologue was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show today. The concept will influence future Audi models, executives said.

When Audi released advanced sketches of its Prologue Concept, it seemed unlikely it would actually translate the exotic design into sheet metal. But the maker more than delivered, as a standing-room-only crowd discovered during the Audi news conference at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

And while many over-the-top show cars traditionally vanish from sight once the spotlight is dimmed, luxury buyers will continue to see the influence of the new Audi Prologue for years to come, officials revealed – though not directly in production form, as some had anticipated.

Gain Traction!

While not meant to reveal plans for an all-new flagship coupe, the Prologue, “is more than a show car for Audi,” revealed Marc Lichte, the maker’s new design chief. “Prologue is a teaser for our next generation A6, A7 and A8” models. (more…)

Audi Set to Select From Three New TT Concepts

Maker planning 20% increase in model offerings.

by on Oct.03, 2014

Audi's TT Sportback concept gets 56 mph while putting out 400 horsepower.

Along with the new TTS Roadster unveiled at its Paris Motor Show news conference this week, Audi pulled the wraps off the 400-horsepower TT Sportback Concept.

The four-door version of its little roadster is the latest of three TT show cars the maker has unveiled this year, and Audi CEO Rupert Stadler tells, the goal isn’t simply to offer up a few fantasies in chrome. The goal is to gauge public feedback to determine which of the three prototypes should be added to the Audi line-up.

That would become part of a broader expansion of the maker’s product portfolio, Stadler revealing a goal of boosting the current 50 products and variants to 60 by decade’s end. (more…)

Audi's Sport Quattro concept gets new high-tech lamps -- and a new name, the Laserlight.

Audi’s Sport Quattro Concept is about to make a return engagement – albeit renamed the Sport Quattro Laserlight to put a focus on the show car updates newly installed laser headlamps.

The striking hybrid design made its first appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show last autumn and, in its revised form will debut at the sprawling Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week.  Though designed to celebrate the maker’s original, 1983 Sport Quattro, the show car can be seen as “pointing the towards the future,” the maker suggests, hinting that a production version could soon follow.

Audi Nanuk Quattro Concept is One Wild Ride

Another surprise from Frankfurt.

by on Sep.10, 2013

Audi teamed with Italdesign on the Nanuk Concept.

Audi, it seems, is full of surprises as it helps get the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show underway.  We’ve already gotten a look at the Sport Quattro Concept and the new 2014 A3 Cabriolet, but this year the maker is kicking in with a third new design, the wild and striking Audi Nanuk Quattro Concept.

Bearing hints of a tricked-out A7 – with just a hint, dare we say it, of a Chevy Camaro – it’s an all-wheel-drive, turbo-diesel supercar designed by the legendary Italdesign Giugiaro. Oh, and if the Nanuk creates a sense of déjà vu, no surprise. The Italdesign team just happened to craft the not-so-coincidentally similar Giugiaro Parcour Concept for Audi earlier this year.

Like the Sport Quattro Concept, the Nanuk highlights the Audi all-wheel-drive system, and it is also meant to prove that high performance is not necessarily synonymous with low fuel economy.

The Nanuck’s twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V-10 turbodiesel pours out a solid 544 horsepower – but what’s really impressive is its 738 pound-feet of torque delivered through a modified 7-speed Steptronic gearbox.  That’s enough to launch the nearly 4,200-pound concept vehicle from 0 to 100 kmh – 0 to 62.5 mph – in a mere 3.8 seconds, with Nanuck top speed rated at 190 mph.

Audi Reveals S3, RS5 Cabriolet – But Only One is America-Bound

Audi reveals a hot hatch and a cool convertible.

by on Sep.28, 2012

The new Audi S3: no plans for the States.

There was plenty of action on the Audi stand during the first Paris Motor Show press day, the maker balancing the futuristic Crosslane Cabriolet Concept with two more down-to-Earth production models.  But that doesn’t mean that either the new S3 compact sport hatch or the new RS5 Cabriolet would fall into the mundane category.

They’re two degrees of hot, the latest performance models in the expanding Audi assault on rivals BMW M and Mercedes-Benz AMG.  The good news for U.S. drivers is that the coupe cabrio will land in U.S. showrooms sometime during the first quarter of next year.  For now, however, there are no plans for the hot hatch to make the trans-Atlantic leap.

On Top of the News!

That’s doesn’t mean we won’t see an S3 option sometime in the future, however.  Audi is working up a new sedan version of the A3, not confident it can generate enough sales of a hatchback.  The sportier “S” designation may be in the works following the launch of the 4-door model.

First Look: Audi Crosslane Coupe Concept

Is it a coupe, a crossover, a convertible? Audi says all three.

by on Sep.27, 2012

The Audi Crossland Coupe Concept adopts advanced, lightweight materials like carbon fiber, a plug-in hybrid drivetrain and a slick social media system.

Spend much time with automotive planners, designers or engineers at this year’s Paris Motor Show and you’re bound to hear the words, “white space,” come up quite frequently.  In today’s hotly competitive automotive market, manufacturers are struggling to find products that carve out their own unique identity.

In some cases, makers hope to come up with all-new segments – as Chrysler did in the mid-1980s with the first modern minivan. Others want to find unique ways to combine existing products – the route Audi chose with the Crosslane Coupe Concept making its debut this week in the City of Lights.

The Audi Crosslane Coupe Concept is, the maker explains, a blend of crossover, convertible and coupe.  And it makes use of plenty of advanced technologies, both in the basic platform, body and powertrain, as well as inside the concept’s very sophisticated interior.

Audi Reveals New A4 – and Drops a Surprise with Q3 Vail

Compact crossover will reach U.S in late '13 or early '14.

by on Jan.10, 2012

Audi has given a mid-cycle refresh to its 2013 A4 and S4 line-up.

Audi will enter one of the fastest-growing segments of the global luxury market, the maker confirmed during a Detroit Auto Show preview, with the launch of the new Q3 crossover in late 2013.

The maker’s Q3 Vail concept made a surprise appearance during a press event that was supposed to focus on the introduction of Audi’s next-generation A4 and S4 sedans.  But as important as those compact models are, Audi AG CEO Rupert Stadler has described the compact crossover market as the “next pillar” it has to “conquer.”

News Now!

Audi has been doing a good job of conquesting buyers in recent years, global sales surging to a record 1.3 million last year, while the Volkswagen AG luxury brand topped 117,000 for an all-time high in the U.S. market.  The production Q3 could be a critical next step in the U.S., in particular.

First Look: Audi Urban Concept

Electric drive and 1+1 seating.

by on Aug.10, 2011

Audi's ultra-light Urban Concept will premier at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Taking its etron concept in a new direction, Audi will unveil the new Urban Concept battery car at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show.  The latest in a series of innovative offerings designed to test the limits of high-mileage design, perhaps the most distinctive feature of the carbon fiber prototype is its use of a 1+1 seating arrangement.

Designed for congested urban roads, Audi says the Urban Concept “combines elements of a racing car, a fun car and an urban car into one radical new concept.”

Stay in the Know!

The prototype is assembled out of ultra-light carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, or CFRP, panels; light and strong, many experts believe the material will eventually replace steel if the industry can only figure out how to mass produce it and drive down costs.

The design utilizes offset seating with access through an aircraft-like sliding canopy and tailgate.
