“We've always viewed that people love surprises," Apple CEO Tim Cook said. Surprise! It may not build a car after all.

Apple Inc. plans for the car business, code-named “Project Titan,” have fascinated the automotive industry around the world even though Apple has said little of substance about the possibility.

Now new reports are circulating that Apple has “drastically scaled back its automotive ambitions” and has even “eliminated hundreds of jobs” even though it has never acknowledged hiring folks for the uato project in the first place.

Instead, Apple, according to several accounts circulating in the Silicon Valley media, will now concentrate on developing a system for autonomous vehicles that could be sold downstream to one of world’s car companies. (more…)

Could BMW Partner With Apple on Autonomous Battery Car?

Tech giant may be looking to change course on Project Titan.

Could this be Apple's first EV? The tech giant is rumored to be talking with BMW about producing an electric autonomous vehicle version of it.

With Apple reportedly looking to bring an autonomous battery-car to market, there are growing signs the U.S. high-tech giant could pair with German automaker BMW, possibly to produce a customized version of the BMW i3 city car.

The two companies confirmed they met last year, but the discussions initially led nowhere, Apple apparently exploring the option of producing a vehicle entirely on its own. But the Silicon Valley firm has apparently decided to follow a path more like tech rival Google, which would mean partnering on a vehicle project rather than going into automotive manufacturing.

Apple's Jeff Williams hinted the company may be looking at moving into the auto industry with more than its CarPlay infotainment system.

Even as General Motors announced plans to become the first automaker to put the Apple CarPlay infotainment system into 14 new Chevrolet models next year, the Silicon Valley tech giant dropped some new hints it could soon challenge GM on the car-making front.

In recent months, there’s been widespread speculation that Apple will launch a high-tech, battery-powered vehicle in the near future. According to a February story in the Wall Street Journal, the effort is known within the traditionally secretive Apple as Project Titan.

During a California tech conference this week, Apple’s senior vice president of operations tossed more fuel on the fire, suggesting, “The car is the ultimate mobile device, isn’t it? We explore all kinds of categories,” said Jeff Williams. “We’ll certainly look at those and evaluate where we can make a huge difference.” (more…)
