Ford, Amazon Want to Sync You Up with Alexa

Voice assistant one of many new connected-car features for Sync.

Ford will make Alexa available to Sync users in-car, while also letting them control vehicle features from home using Amazon's Echo.

Ford is about to take Amazon’s Alexa for a ride.

She’s the wildly popular voice assistant now showing up in millions of homes equipped with various versions of Amazon’s Echo hardware. But, starting this month, owners of Ford vehicles equipped with the Sync infotainment system will be able to access some of the connected-car features in their vehicles remotely using one of Echo devices.

And, over the summer, motorists will be able to access Alexa herself from inside the vehicle to ask about things like traffic, the weather and restaurant tips, or to control some of their home automation technologies. Among other things, that means they could turn the lights on, start the coffeemaker and open the garage from behind the wheel using voice commands.

Fiat Chrysler Teams With Amazon to Sell Cars in Italy

Online buyers get special discounts on purchases.

FCA and Amazon are partnering up to sell vehicles online in Italy. The brand will offer three models including the Panda.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. is teaming up with Amazon to sell vehicles online on a limited scale.

FCA plans to sell vehicles through Amazon’s Italian website and will involve only three Fiat brand models, the Fiat Panda, the Fiat 500 and the Fiat 500L However, customers ordering online will be eligible for special promotions.

FCA said the choice was deliberate because the Panda is Italy’s biggest selling car, while buyers of the 500 and its larger 500L version embody the young and adventurous nature this initiative is trying to appeal to. (more…)

Ford Expands on Mobility Plans at CES

Ford Motor Co. outlined a far-reaching step into the future during a keynote speech by CEO Mark Fields marking the opening of the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The maker is putting “one foot into the future,” said Fields, as it expands from traditional automotive manufacturing into new areas of “mobility,” such as ride and car-sharing. Among a variety of projects announced by Fields, Ford will partner with Amazon to incorporate the cloud-based voice assistant, Alexa into its vehicles. That would allow a driver to not just open a garage door but turn on lights and adjust the thermostat by voice command.

The Tuesday morning event notably included no mention of a widely anticipated tie-up between Ford and Google, even though the automaker announced a major expansion in its own autonomous vehicle program. But CEO Fields left the door open to a later announcement, stressing that Ford is talking with “a variety of other potential partners.”
