Former GM Design Chief Heads List of 2017 HOF Inductees

Ed Welburn was not only the first African-American design chief but only the sixth man to head design for General Motors.

The Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn, Michigan, released its 2017 list of inductees and the four figures set for induction reflect the industry’s diversity, reach and rich history by naming a top designer and a trio of innovative entrepreneurs.

The list of nominees includes former General Motors Vice President Edward Welburn, who retired last year after sparking a renaissance inside GM’s design studios.

“Welburn was once referred to as ‘the man who brought beauty back to GM,’” the Hall of Fame noted in the statement nominating the former GM design chief. (more…)

Brembo Expanding Presence in North America

Michigan facility lynchpin to growing new car business.

Brembo SpA Chairman Alberto Bombassei said the company is planning to expand its OEM business in North America.

Over the years, Brembo has burnished its reputation by its association with high-performance brands and motorsports teams as well as car buffs in the aftermarket.

But the Italian maker of braking components has recalibrated its strategy and is now after a larger share of the original equipment market, particularly in North America where it has steadily expanded its factory in Homer, Michigan, to supply a growing list of customers.

Brembo SpA Chairman Alberto Bombassei said during a ceremony at the plant tucked away amid the rolling hills of Southern Michigan 100 miles from Detroit that North America will become the company’s number one market by the end of 2014. (more…)
