Acura MDX Sales Set Record – But Passenger Cars Remain a Problem

Japanese luxury brand bills MDX as best-selling 3-row ute ever.

by on Jul.11, 2014

The 2014 Acura MDX has readily outsold all its competitors in the three-row luxury SUV category.

With sales up more than 68% so far this year, Acura is billing its MDX as the best-selling three-row luxury SUV ever. The redesign has clearly clicked with consumers, but the MDX has been a hot-seller ever since its introduction 15 years ago, topping all other three-row competitors every year since 2002.

That’s the good news for Acura, but there’s also plenty of bad. Despite introducing several new passenger cars in recent years, including its entry-level ILX and flagship RDX, Acura’s passenger cars simply aren’t cutting it with consumers.

So, despite the surge in sales of the brand’s big SUV, Acura’s overall volume slumped 18.6% in June, making it one of the few brands to report a decline as the U.S. car market continues its recovery.

“MDX is the clear benchmark in its class,” crowed the Acura Division’s General Manager Mike Accavitti, proclaiming that “Luxury car buyers have spoken.”

Say Farewell As These Models Drive Off into the Sunset

But some just might return.

by on Dec.23, 2013

The Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet is leaving almost as quickly as it arrived. The little-purchased Nissan is getting cut from the maker's lineup.

As the year draws to a close you’ll likely see more than a few lists of the famous names who have moved on, as they say, to a “better place.” But what about those automotive models that have also moved on to the junkyard in the sky?

There are more models on the market than ever these days, manufacturers racing to fill every possible “white space” before the competition does. But that means, more than occasionally, that the industry comes up with some clunkers, like the misbegotten Acura ZDX hatchback and the Nissan Murano CrossTour. The latter, a cross between an SUV and convertible, will live on – at least for now – though the Acura will likely soon be not only gone but forgotten.

For those who may be sad to see the offerings on this list vanish, don’t give up hope. Occasionally, products that met an early demise will make a return. The Chevrolet Camaro not only experienced reincarnation, but has dominated its long-time foe the Ford Mustang since its return. The Acura NSX should be back in production form by early in 2015. And while Honda will pull the plug on the Ridgeline pickup at the end of the 2014 model-year, look for an all-new version to return to the line-up by 2016, the maker says. Acura Will Update – Then Drop — Slow-Selling ZDX

A grand send-off for a product few will miss.

by on Oct.10, 2012

Fade to black: Acura updates the ZDX before banishing the unloved crossover.

Some makers prefer to let their failures slip away quietly.  Acura, however, is giving a big send-off to the unloved ZDX as it prepares to banish the slow-selling crossover off into oblivion.

The ZDX has been one of the poorest performers in the entire lineup of Honda/Acura products – and one of an assortment of niche products that didn’t quite connect with U.S. consumers, also including the Honda-branded Insight and CR-Z models.

The maker is now looking to either find fixes – as with the updated CR-Z unveiled at the Paris Motor Show — or pare back and, as a corporate statement suggests, “sharpen (the) focus on new models and core products.”

The Acura ZDX emerged in 2009 as part of a new wave of crossovers that seemed to be trying to find a balance between sports coupe and sport-ute. Perhaps the only real success in the segment has been the BMX X6. For the first nine months of the year, Acura sold just 642 ZDX crossovers, down from an already anemic 1220 during the same period the year before.  By comparison, the luxury maker sold 4692 of its more conventional MDX crossovers in September.

Acura Will Show Redesigned TL in Chicago

Automaker not ready to release details of 2012 model.

by on Jan.25, 2011

Acura is set to announce an updated version of its TL sedan at the Chicago Auto Show.

Many pundits would argue that Acura’s design studio has sort of lost its way with its recent designs, but next month’s Chicago Auto Show could be a chance for the automaker to change course.

Acura will show a “newly refined” 2012 TL at its press conference, scheduled for Feb. 9.

“The TL … further enhances its position in the segment with aggressive, yet refined styling and performance,” said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales.

First Look: Audi A7 5-Door Hatchback

New A7 five-door "coupe" debuts in Europe this fall for €51,600.

by on Jul.27, 2010

Audi is trying to sell some utility and some styling sizzle in an odd configuration at a premium price.

Audi has pulled the wraps off its latest full-size model – the A7 Sportback. The sleek five-door is an attempt to see if there is a growing market for a large, luxurious hatchback design.

Typically hatchbacks are associated with inexpensive compact cars, particularly in the United States.

However, Honda and Acura are working the same area of a thus far unknown market segment with the Crosstour and ZDX models that are currently on sale and very close in dimensions to the A7. BMW is also very much a factor here with its X6, err, SUV. (See First Drive: 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour and BMW X6 M Debuts in New York )

Audi claims the A7 has “the sporty elegance of a coupe, the comfort of a sedan and the practicality of a station wagon.” The German company will find out if potential buyers agree when the quasi-sporty, quasi-luxury car appears this fall in dealers with a € 51,600 ($67,255) starting price.

Open wide for 49 cubic feet of cargo capacity when both rear seat backs are folded forward.

How this segment is classified – crossovers, SUVs, fastback wagons, 4-door hatchbacks, 5-door hatches – will no doubt be the subject of an interminable industry debate, as marketers look for the magic words that will motivate people to spend premium dollars for utility that is less expensively and more efficiently obtained in mainstream offerings.

Sorting the Nomenclature!

While the A7 has the signature Audi grille and option LED headlights that are becoming a distinctive design cue, focus will be on the large rear hatch that provides access to a 535-liter (18.89 cu ft) capacity, which increases to a volume of 1,390 liters (49.09 cu ft) with the rear seatbacks folded forward. The styling works against optimizing room here.

Sneak Peak: 2010 Acura ZDX

Is it a crossover or a coupe or a sedan or a SUV?

by on Apr.08, 2009

Good looking is good looking no matter what you call the four-door hatchback.

Good looking is good looking no matter what you call this Acura four-door hatchback.

Every company is looking for the next big thing as traditional SUVs continue to free fall from fashionable shopping lists with sales diving 30% or more this year. There’s a prototype four-door on display at the New York International Auto Show that is looking like a fresh Japanese take that admittedly emulates BMW’s X6 crossover that debuted a year ago — just in time for the SUV sales disaster.

Since the production version of  this stylish prototype of a sports sedan goes on-sale in the fall of 2009, we’ll have to figure out how to characterize it by then.  Acura claims that the concept was well underway before the BMW appeared.

It is not surprising in the fashionable, faux world of automotive marketing that Acura claims  the ZDX is “segment bending” with “stunning coupe-like styling.”

Well, okay, but four doors are four doors, even if the rear door handles are hidden in the C-pillar.  And then there’s the all glass tailgate. The  new, err, hatchback model will be priced somewhere between the MDX sport ute, which it is based on, and the  $55,000 top-of-the line RL sedan. This likely means in the high $40,000 range, we are guessing.

“The ZDX is truly a luxury performance coupe – plus,” said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales. “The emotional coupe styling coupled with a luxurious and dramatic interior and surprising versatility, allows the ZDX to define its own segment and attract an entirely new customer.”

Well, we’ll see about that.  (more…)
