The 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo gets a significant boost in horsepower for this year.

Porsche is rolling out the next generation 911 Turbo and Turbo S with a long-list of features such an all-wheel-drive system, active rear-axle steering, adaptive aerodynamics, full-LED headlights, and up to 560 horsepower from a flat six-cylinder engine with twin-turbochargers.

The new 911 Turbo is an ultra performance car with an entirely new chassis and lightweight design with a 3.9-inch longer wheelbase and larger 20-inch wheels. The Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control active anti-roll system, which is being offered for the first time in 911 Turbo models, increases dynamic performance even more.

Standard equipment on the 911 Turbo S, is the Sport Chrono Package Plus with dynamic engine mounts, and Porsche Carbon Ceramic Composite Brakes, which are optional on the 911 Turbo. The result: The new 911 Turbo S shortens the lap time for the North Loop of the Nurburgring to well under seven and a half minutes – using standard production tires.

Porsche Panamera Debuts in Europe at Frankfurt

The four-door Panamera is the real news, and the real product bet in the depressed global economy.

Porsche, in the process of being swallowed whole by Volkswagen AG after its reckless takeover bid for Europe’s largest carmaker failed, resorted to the 911 to bring the discussion back to its expanding product line at Frankfurt Motor Show.

The company said sales were off 24% in its fiscal year that ended July 31, but claimed the worst of its global sales decline was now over.

Porsche sold 75,200 vehicles and income dropped 12% to €6.6 billion or $10 billion in the fiscal year. Sales of the 911 were down -14% to 27,100; Cayenne sports utility vehicle -25% to 34,300; Boxster dropped -40% to 13,100.

Four variations of the 911 appeared on the show stand, and the Leipzig-built Panamera four-door appeared just in time for its market launch in Europe.

Porsche showed the latest-generation 911 Turbo in both coupe and cabriolet models. Premiering alongside the venerable turbo were a series of variants, including the 911 GT3 RS, a “race ready” 911 GT3 Cup car, and a “limited edition” 911 Sport Classic, which won’t come to the United States.

There’ll be some big news from Porsche, next month, at the Frankfurt Motor Show.  But we’ve gotten a first look at the 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo – which will be offered in both Coupe and Cabriolet trim – and want to share it with our readers.

The word, “more,” immediately comes to mind when describing the new Porsche flagship.  It will be defined by an all-new engine, a new design, and performance numbers that normally fit into the supercar category. Yet, it also will deliver better mileage, a seeming must, no matter what category you compete in, these days.

The big news is the all-new flat-six boxer engine, the first time in the 35-year history of the Porsche Turbo that the sports car gets an all-new engine of its own.  Displacing a modest 3.8 liters, it nonetheless will make a stunning 500 horsepower – 20 bhp more than the 3.6-liter boxer-six in the 2009 Porsche 911 Turbo.  Torque jumps from 511 to 516 pound-feet with the optional Sport Chrono package.  That’s enough to launch the 2-seater from 0 to 60, the German maker claims, in just 3.2 seconds.

To make those numbers, the new engine feature Direct Injection, a variable turbine geometry turbocharger, and a new expansion intake manifold first used by Porsche on its GT2 supercar.

Buyers will be offered a choice of either a 7-speed manual gearbox or the Porsche-Doppelkupplung.  Call the latter PDK, for short.  It’s essentially the same gearbox offered as an option on the new, 4-door Panamera, and can operate in either automatic or manual mode.  In essence, this electronically-shifted manual system always has two gears ready to go, so there’s none of the bucking of earlier electro-mechanical transmissions, and shifts are not only smooth but lightning fast.
