Overseas Markets Clamoring for New Mustang, Ford Officials Claim

Strong demand could see addition of third shift at Flat Rock plant.

Ford President of the Americas Joe Hinrichs poses with the first of the 2015 Mustangs off the line.

The first of the new 2015 Ford Mustangs rolled off the assembly line this week, and though the new pony car won’t go on sale in Europe or Asia until next year, overseas dealers have already snapped up their allocation of the sixth-generation Mustangs, according to Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s President of The Americas.

The Mustang has traditionally been a car for North America, but it has nonetheless developed a loyal following in markets around the world, with a number of dealers trading in so-called “gray market” exports. That strong following convinced Ford it could start marketing the newly redesigned coupe and convertible pony cars globally.

“We’re not yet (officially) taking orders in other parts of the world yet because we’re going to start here in North America filling up the pipeline. While far from a hands-on driving experience, the event revealed that the 50th anniversary Mustang is likely to live up to the promise laid out by Ford’s global product development chief Raj Nair, who boasted to the media group that “This is the greatest, best-performing Mustang we have ever had.”

Where's King Kong when you need him?

Somebody call out the Air Force. Oh, wait, that’s not King Kong but a Ford Mustang scaling the heights of the Empire State Building.

Repeating a stunt first tried a full 50 years ago to celebrate the launch of the original ’64-1/2 Mustang, Ford plans to put one of the new 2015 Mustangs on display on the 86th floor observation deck of the city’s iconic skyscraper next month.

High-Flying Headlines!

But as with King Kong, the Mustang will have to be sliced down to size to get up there – with or without Fay Wray in the driver’s seat.

New 2015 Ford Mustang Had to Balance Old and New

New platform, new engine, new technology – but look still familiar.

The new 2015 Ford Mustang takes a bow.

She was just 22 years old, a fresh graduate from a teacher’s college and excited about life, so when Gail Wise went to the Ford showroom near her family’s home in suburban Chicago, she told the salesman she wanted something new, youthful and special.

He wasn’t supposed to show her the car tucked in the back of the showroom under the tarp. The official introduction wasn’t for two more days, but for some reason, he lifted the covers and then sold the powder blue 1964-1/2 Ford Mustang to the entranced young woman.

Ford Mustang News!

It was the same Mustang that Wise, now retired, proudly showed off during the ceremonies marking the debut of an all-new, sixth-generation pony car designed to mark the 50th anniversary of the Mustang’s launch. (more…)
