First Drive: 2018 Honda Accord

Maintaining the gold standard.

by on Oct.06, 2017

Honda's new 2018 Accord is designed to attract younger buyers, according to designers.

Someone at Honda is trying to send a message about the 2018 Honda Accord.

Why else would the automaker show the latest version of their bread-and-butter midsize sedan, at the hotel that played host to the Bretton Woods International Monetary Conference in 1944? It was at this remote resort nestled in the White Mountains where representatives from 44 countries hammered out the Bretton Woods Agreement, which created the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank – two institutions that are still with us. Notably, it also propped up the failing gold standard with much help from America, although even the U.S. abandoned it in 1971.

Nevertheless, the concept of a product being the gold standard among its competitors is very real, rendering Bretton Woods the perfect venue for Honda to reveal the redesigned 2018 Accord. And while you could call this 10th generation Honda the Bretton Woods Accord, by any measure, it’s the gold standard among midsize sedans. (more…)

Honda Investing Big in Future of Accord

Officials believe new model will impact midsize segment.

by on Sep.18, 2017

Honda invested more than $250 million and added 300 jobs at its Marysville, Ohio, plant for the new Accord.

Honda celebrated the kickoff of full production of its top-selling Accord sedan by announcing the $267 million investment in the Ohio plant that produces the car. The new support will bring 300 jobs to the facility.

“The new jobs and production growth will enable us to meet anticipated strong demand for the new Honda Accord,” said Rob May, MAP plant manager, in a statement.

News Now!

The money is really a reflection of Honda’s optimism about the midsize car market, and the redesigned for 2018 Honda Accord. Honda officials believe that despite the trend of rising utility vehicle sales in the U.S., the midsize market holds great potential. (more…)

So Near But Yet So Far. NFC Just Beginning to Find a Home in Cars

Honda adds NFC capabilities to new Accord. Others set to follow.

by on Jul.17, 2017

The "N" symbol alerts you where to tap your Android phone to pair up using NFC technology.

(This story has been updated to note that Mercedes-Benz is now offering NFC in some versions of its new E-Clas line.)

Bluetooth? Meh. In-car WiFi? Ancient history. Automakers are just starting to roll out a new wireless technology that could offer motorists a number of advantages.

It’s known as Near Field Communications, or NFC for short, and if you have a relatively recent smartphone you might already know some of its uses. Among other things, NFC is the system used by Apple for its iPhone payment system.

Tech Talk!

Automakers have been talking about adding the technology for a number of years. But NFC is really only now getting a ride, the technology showing up on the 2018 Honda Accord introduced last week, with several other models set to add the technology in the near future.

Honda Pulls Wraps Off All-New 2018 Accord

Update: could an Accord Type-R be in the works?

by on Jul.14, 2017

Honda goes to the heart of its domestic opposition, revealing the 2018 Accord in Detroit.

Honda has finally pulled the covers off its tenth-generation Accord, revealing a sedan  that’s both more stylish and lavishly equipped and which takes a “new direction” in its powertrain line-up with the debut of not just one but two new turbocharged engine options.

The launch of the 2018 Honda Accord comes at a critical time for both the Japanese automaker and the auto industry as a whole. Long one of the U.S. market’s best-selling models, the new Honda sedan will launch into a market where buyers by the million are migrating from passenger cars to SUVs, crossovers and other light trucks. Complicating matters, Accord will go up against a dramatic new version of arch-rival Toyota’s midsize Camry sedan.

Breaking News!

“We are redefining the Honda Accord for a new generation of buyers by bringing something unexpected that challenges the idea of what a mainstream sedan can be,” said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president of the Automobile Division at American Honda.

Honda Recalls 1.15 Million Accords due to Possible Engine Fires

Japanese automaker notes four vehicles have caught fire.

by on Jul.14, 2017

Honda is recalling 1.15 million Accords in the U.S. built between 2013 and 2016.

Honda is recalling more than 1 million Accords in the U.S. because a faulty battery sensor may cause a fire in the vehicle’s engine compartment. The action affects Accords produced between 2013 and 2016.

The Japanese automaker noted that four vehicles have reported fires resulting from the defect, but no injuries. The recall covers more than 1.5 million cars worldwide.

News You Can Trust!

The issue stems from a poor seal around the sensor that monitors the battery’s state of charge. If the seal is compromised, substances like road salt or water can short the sensor, potentially leading to a fire. (more…)

Honda Set to Reveal All-New Accord on July 14

Gen-10 sedan getting Civic design cues, Type-R engine.

by on Jun.19, 2017

The new 2018 Accord will clearly borrow key design cues from the Honda Civic.

One of the most important automotive unveilings of the year – at least for Honda fans – will take place next month, the automaker pulling the wraps an all-new version of the midsize Accord sedan on July 14th.

The Japanese automaker offered up a teaser image to substitute for hard details about the new model – though we did get a look at a heavily camouflaged version of the 2018 Honda Accord during a visit to the company’s Japanese proving grounds last month.

News and Reviews You Can Trust!

During that visit we got to drive an early prototype complete with the new turbocharged inline-four engine that will replace the familiar Honda V-6 in the tenth-generation Accord. The new model is new from the ground up and is also expected to feature a new suspension system similar to what was offered on a “mule” car we drove during the proving grounds visit.

Next-Gen Honda Accord Getting the Fast-Beating Heart of a Civic Type-R

Nudging 120 into a banked oval.

by on Jun.09, 2017

A heavily camouflaged version of the 2018 Honda Accord due in production later this year.

The Shinkansen, Japan’s lightning-fast bullet train, has nothing on us.

As we rocket down the back straight, the heavily camouflaged 2018 Honda Accord quickly hits triple digits and keeps on climbing…110, 120. At that point, it’s time to take our eyes off the instrument cluster as we rise to the upper lane of the steeply banked oval at the Honda Proving Ground in Haga, Japan. As we come out the other side, we’re clocking bullet train speeds.

The Last Word!

Those who think of the Honda Accord as a competent, albeit staid, midsize sedan or coupe could be in for a big surprise when the 10th-generation model hits showrooms later this year. All the more surprising, the added performance comes at the same time that Honda abandons the V-6 option long offered on the Accord line.
