Opel Insignia Offers Strong Hint of Next Buick Regal

Plans could be complicated by sale of Opel to PSA.

by on Mar.08, 2017

Opel designer Mark Adams rehearses his line before the Geneva debut of the Opel Insignia.

Opel could definitely use a lift. The once-grand European automaker has been struggling for years, and it didn’t help when General Motors announced last month that it was likely to sell the German-based brand to France’s PSA.

That deal was announced just a day before the opening of the annual Geneva Motor Show, but as far as Opel was concerned, the big news was the launch of two critical new products, the Crossland X crossover, and the newly redesigned Insignia.

We're Your Automotive News Source!

The latter sedan is, in itself, particularly important because it not only lands a new family sedan in product-hungry Opel showrooms, but it also offers a strong hint of what’s to come when GM’s Buick brand unveils its own Regal sedan at the New York International Auto Show next month.

Wrapping Up Opel Sale Could Take GM Years to Complete

GM and Opel’s new parent, Peugeot, might actually expand ties.

by on Mar.08, 2017

Opel's past and present debut together: the new Crossland X and the made-over Insignia.

When General Motors and PSA announced terms for the sale of the long-troubled Opel earlier this week, they said they expect to complete the deal later this year.

From a legal standpoint, barring some last-minute regulatory challenges, that’s likely to happen. But while the hand-off will be formalized, on paper, the long ties between GM and Opel will likely continue well into the coming decade.

A full separation “is going to be (over an) extended period of time,” GM President Dan Ammann told TheDetroitBureau.com during a conversation at the Geneva Motor Show.

Performance News!

The five-door model, equipped with a 306-hp turbocharged four, will become the fastest version of the Honda Civic ever to reach U.S. shores, and Honda hopes it will help it challenge such serious competitors as the Ford Focus ST and Volkswagen Golf R.

All-new platform, upgraded interior.

The new Subaru XV will come to the U.S. as the next-generation Crosstrek.

The brand that helped launch the crossover-utility explosion is hoping to gain even more momentum with the Geneva Motor Show debut of the next-generation Subaru XV.

The new model doesn’t stray far from last year’s XV Concept – and it will reappear in near identical form at the upcoming New York International Auto Show, albeit wearing the Subaru Crosstrek badge.

Product News!

The 2018 Subaru XV-cum-Crosstrek rides on an entirely new platform, but what will likely appeal most to buyers around the world are the improvements to both cabin refinement, as well as the range of new comfort and safety equipment promised by Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, the President and CEO of what is being renamed Subaru Corporation.

Supercar set to top “range” of new, mid-engine models.

by on Mar.08, 2017

The Aston Martin Valkyrie takes the British brand into a new realm of performance.

Aston Martin is ending its long product drought in a big way, as it is demonstrating at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, starting with a F1-derived hybrid hypercar that will usher in an assortment of new mid-engine models, the maker’s CEO tells TheDetroitBureau.com.

Named for the Norse angels who carried fallen warriors off the battlefield, the Aston Martin Valkyrie is the product of an alliance with Red Bull Advanced Technologies. It’s also the latest in a series of extreme machines from the British maker that, since the debut of the original Vantage in 1951, have used “V” names to stand out from the rest of the Aston line-up.

Auto Show News!

With its bubble cockpit and oversized wheel wells, the new model, codenamed AM-RB 001, will be the most powerful model in Aston’s history. Though final numbers have yet to be released, Aston CEO Andy Palmer said the hypercar’s final output “has to be at least 1,000 horsepower.”

VW Teases New Premium Fastback for U.S., Global Markets

Due for Geneva debut, four-door could fill niche left open by Phaeton.

by on Nov.28, 2016

VW plans to top its sedan line-up with the new Arteon fastback due to market for 2018.

Determined to rebuild in the wake of its costly diesel emissions scandal – especially in the critical U.S. market – Volkswagen is offering a teaser image of the “premium fastback” model it plans to unveil at the Geneva Motor Show three months from now.

To be called the Volkswagen Arteon, it will be “positioned above” the brand’s largest current model, the Passat, and potentially fill an upscale niche abandoned when the VW Phaeton was pulled from production. But the Arteon is not expected to go quite as far upmarket as that big sedan, which made pretenses of targeting the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7-Series and even sibling brand Audi’s A8.

The Arteon “emphasizes emotionality in the upper mid-class,” says a statement from VW accompanying the teaser image. “The four-door fastback impresses both through revolutionary design and great practical value in use.” The statement concludes that “This combination is unique.”
