Smart “All-In” on Battery-Cars

U.S. only getting Fortwo ED, however.

by on Sep.30, 2016

Green machine: The Smart Fortwo ED Cabriolet makes its debut at the Paris Motor Show.

Range anxiety remains one of the biggest concerns for consumers considering a battery-electric vehicle but it’s less of a concern for those who might only need their vehicles for short runs in dense urban settings. And that could play out well for the little Smart brand.

Daimler AG’s city car subsidiary plugged into the Paris Motor Show with a trio of next-generation battery-electric vehicles, one for each of Smart’s models. The preview was part of a broader series of announcement about electrification that included the launch of the new Mercedes-EQ brand-within-a-brand.

“Smart is going all-in on battery power,” declared Daimler AG Chairman and CEO Dieter Zetsche, as the newest Smart Electric Drive trio drove onto the stage.

Audi Reveals Trio of New Models in Paris

Modial de l’Automobile spotlights new Q5, S5 Sportback and RS3.

by on Sep.29, 2016

Audi is shifting production of the next-gen Q5 ute to its new plant in Mexico.

With a record number of new products in the pipeline, Audi had plenty to show off during its Paris Motor Show news conference Thursday, a trio of new offerings targeting a wide range of global product segments.

Already the most popular luxury crossover on the market, the Volkswagen subsidiary is hoping to build even more momentum with the launch of a completely new Q5 sport-utility vehicle. Also on hand, Audi rolled out the new S5 Sportback. The third global premier not only marked the launch of the new RS3 Sedan but the debut of the maker’s new Audi Sport sub-brand.

The Journal of Record!

“These three new models symbolize what our brand stands for,” said Rupert Stadler, the Audi AG CEO. Actually, that’s not entirely true. Unlike its two major German rivals, Audi put much of the focus on performance during its news conference, something of a surprise considering how much it has emphasized battery-car and other green technologies in recent years.

Infiniti Drives into Paris with Pair of Updated Models and Potentially Groundbreaking New Engine

New Q50 and Revised QX Inspiration models make debut alongside Variable-Compression turbo.

by on Sep.29, 2016

The shape of things to come? Infiniti tweaks its design concept, the QX Inspiration.

At a Paris Motor Show marked by the absence of a number of key brands, Infiniti seems determined to fill in the gaps. The Japanese luxury brand rolled into the City of Lights with a pair of updated models, as well as the debut of a radical new engine design that could give gasoline propulsion some new life in the face of a quickening assault by battery power and other alternative technologies.

From a product standpoint, the big news is the world debut of the updated Infiniti Q50, the midsize sedan receiving some styling tweaks and a number of technology upgrades for the 2017 model-year. Also on hand, the “design evolution” of the QX Inspiration that first grabbed the spotlight last April and hints at the future styling language for the Infiniti brand.

Auto Show News!

Arguably, the most dramatic news centers around the debut of the VC-Turbo, the world’s first production engine that can automatically alter its own compression ratio to find the sweet spot, at any moment, for performance, fuel economy and emissions.

Paris Motor Show Brings Big Launches – But Key Carmakers Absent

Battery-cars, exotics and everything in-between spotlighted in the City of Lights.

by on Sep.28, 2016

The battery-powered Opel Ampera-e will be one of the Paris Motor Show highlights.

The 2017 auto show season officially gets underway this week with a media preview of the Paris Motor Show, one of the industry’s biggest and most widely watched events.

The show will spotlight a number of major debuts from manufacturers like Audi, BMW, Land Rover and France’s own Peugeot and Citroen. There also be plenty of green news, General Motors’ German-based Opel unveiling the long-range Ampera-e battery car and arch-rival Volkswagen expected to reveal its own, long-range EV.

Auto Show News!

But this year’s Paris Motor Show also will be significant for what – and who – is not on hand. A variety of manufacturers and senior industry executives have decided to skip the events in the City of Lights, a move that reflects the growing industry concern about the high cost of major auto shows.

Honda Reveals New Civic Hatchback Ahead of Paris Debut

But U.S. market to get the new 5-door first.

by on Sep.16, 2016

Expect the base 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback to start at around $20,000 in the U.S.

Paris Motor showgoers will be getting the first look at the all-new Honda Civic Hatchback later this month. But American motorists will have the first chance to buy the five-door when it goes on sale in September.

The hatchback is the latest variant to roll out as Honda wraps up the most diverse line-up of Civic models in its history, and U.S. buyers, in particular, will have more alternatives to choose from than ever, including sedan, coupe, hatch and high-performance packages.

Auto Show News!

The new Civic Hatchback will be based off the same, 10th-generation platform used for the other compact models. More significantly, it will mark the first time Honda has offered a five-door version in the U.S. in over a decade, since the seventh-generation Civic was replaced.

Mercedes Upping the Ante with Two More GT Models

GT and GT C Roadsters set to debut at Paris Motor Show.

by on Sep.15, 2016

The new Mercedes-AMG GT and GT C Roadsters will publicly debut later this month.

For those who like their performance cars al fresco, Mercedes-Benz is offering a pair of new options.

Following up on the recent introduction of the AMG GT R, the German maker plans to bring new open-top variants to the Paris Motor Show later this month, the 469-horsepower Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster and the 550-horsepower GT C Roadster.

Performance News!

Both models eschew the hardtop convertible approach Mercedes has adopted with other roadsters, such as the SL and SLC, in favor of simpler – and lighter – ragtops. That said, you can go from a sealed environment to full, open air in just 11 seconds, at speeds up to 30 miles an hour, according to the maker.

Land Rover Teases New 3-Row Discovery

Second “Disco” to make Paris debut.

by on Sep.06, 2016

The new Land Rover Discovery will make its debut this month in Paris, but won't go on sale until mid-2017.

Land Rover’s line-up of mid-range sport-utility vehicles is about to get a bit bigger. Actually, quite a bit bigger, considering the new model set to make its debut at the Paris Motor Show will be a three-row, seven-seater.

The British maker is offering up just this one tease image and it suggests that the new Land Rover Discovery will pick up the more tapered shape of the popular Range Rover Evoq, rather than the classic, “Disco” box.

Auto Show News!

It is also expected to move a fair bit more up-market than the old SUV, adding a larger model to complement the Discovery Sport that came to market little more than a year ago.  Land Rover has also made it clear we’ll see a third model bearing the Disco badge in the not-too-distant future.

Ferrari Readying Drop-Top LaFerrari

Set to be fastest convertible ever for Italian maker.

by on Jul.07, 2016

Ferrari will offer both a folding soft top and a carbon fiber hardtop for the LaFerrari Convertible.

Even before its official unveiling, Ferrari says it has already sold out the fastest convertible it has ever come up with – even before it releases the official price tag, in fact. But that’s likely no surprise considering the incredible demand for the original LaFerrari coupe.

We’re expecting to hear more in the coming days, but what we’ve already learned is that the LaFerrari convertible has undergone “significant and extensive modifications” to maintain the hardtop’s rigidity and improve its aerodynamics.

The cabrio edition will also maintain the original LaFerrari powertrain, a 949 horsepower package using Formula One-derived KERS hybrid technology that will help it launch from 0 to 60 in just 2.4 seconds – on the way to a top speed of 217 mph.
