Chevy Hopes to Spark Interest of Minicar Buyers

2016 Chevrolet Spark debuts in both New York and Seoul.

by on Apr.02, 2015

The 2016 Chevrolet Spark debuted at the New York Auto Show. It's been completely redesigned and hits showrooms in the fourth quarter.

Chevrolet pulled the covers off its new 2016 Spark – twice, in fact, with simultaneous debuts at the auto shows in both New York and Seoul.

The Korean-made minicar has been defying recent trends that have seen sales of small passenger cars slump in light of the drop in fuel prices. Demand for the Chevrolet Spark has risen by nearly a third so far this year after a 14.7% jump in 2014.And with the overall minicar segment expected to grow by 30% by 2018, GM sees even greater opportunities.

Auto Show News!

Though the 2016 Spark retains its basic, tall hatchback shape, GM has adopted a “sleeker, more aerodynamic profile and a progressive take” on the outgoing model’s basic design cues. That fits into efforts to win over young urban buyers who want something small but not necessarily a basic econobox.

Honda Drops Triple Surprise as it Debuts All-New Civic

Maker also confirms plans to bring European 5-door Civic Type R to US.

by on Apr.01, 2015

The new Honda Civic Concept debuting in NY.

There was widespread speculation Honda would serve up some surprises during its New York Auto Show news conference, but the Japanese maker handily outdid expectations.

Perhaps the biggest news – and the biggest surprise – was the announcement that Honda would launch an all-new version of its long-popular Civic model later this year, with its American design and engineering team taking the lead in the project. The new model also will be the first U.S. product line to offer a new turbocharged engine developed as part of Honda’s Earth Dreams powertrain program.

A Real Performer!

Honda also confirmed widespread rumors that it would introduce the European-made Civic Type-R, a five-door “hot hatchback” that, only a few months ago had indicated was not coming to the American market.

“We’re adding an exclamation point” to the news, said the maker’s top U.S. executive, John Mendel, during a media briefing at the Jacob Javits convention center.

New Jaguar XF Gets Larger, Lighter, Faster

Coupe-like sedan takes aim at major German luxury brands.

by on Mar.31, 2015

A Jaguar XF appears to float above the ground during its official NY unveiling on Tuesday in NY.

After offering a tease of the new XF during a daring tightrope drive across the Thames River in London, Jaguar has again taken the wraps off the new mid-lux sedan during a New York Auto Show preview – this time revealing some intriguing details.

The new “aluminum-intensive” model gets much larger inside, resolving long-running complaints about its previously cramped interior. At the same time, it gets lighter and, Jaguar promises, significantly faster.

Power!

“In creating the all-new XF, as a design team, we have been driven by discipline, the discipline of simplicity,” proclaimed Jaguar chief of design Ian Callum, adding that, “Every exterior line on the XF has a clear purpose – nothing is superfluous.”

Cadillac and Lincoln Set to Go Head-to-Head in NY with New Flagships

But the real challenge comes from European, Japanese luxury brands.

by on Mar.30, 2015

Lincoln digs into its history to come up with an all-new Continental flagship concept sedan.

It’s been a busy year for luxury automakers who have unleashed a flood of new products at shows around the world in recent months. And the season will wrap up with the unveiling of such new models as the popular Lexus RX crossover, as well as the $205,000 Range Rover SVAutobiography at the New York Auto Show this week.

But two of Detroit’s two luxury brands are likely to capture much of the spotlight in the Big Apple as they roll out new flagship sedans that Cadillac and Lincoln hope will begin the process of rebuilding their once-lofty rolls in the high-line automotive market.

Auto Show News!

Ford Motor Co.’s Lincoln brand has been giving a select group of journalists a sneak peek at the new Continental sedan ahead of the NY Auto Show’s two-day media event. Cadillac has been only a wee bit more secretive about its own new flagship, dubbed the CT6.

Cadillac Previews New Engine Family for CT6 Flagship Sedan.

Twin-turbo V-6 to turn out 400 hp.

by on Mar.23, 2015

Cadillac's new twin-turbo V-6 was designed to deliver plenty of power while maximizing mileage.

When Cadillac’s first car rolled out in 1902 it was powered by a single-cylinder motor making a whopping 10 horsepower. You can expect five more cylinders and a lot more muscle under the hood when the new Caddy CT6 debuts at the New York Auto Show next week.

Among the various powertrains the new flagship sedan will be offered with, Cadillac plans to offer a pair of new V-6s, including a 3.0-liter twin-turbo package that will balance performance and fuel-economy thanks to technologies such as displacement-on-demand and engine Stop/Start.

Product News!

“With nearly zero turbo lag and a commensurately low-inertia rotating assembly, this engine climbs the rpm ladder and produces power on demand,” said Chief Engineer Rich Bartlett. “Its performance is more than just the maximum output – it’s how it is delivered and the new 3.0L Twin Turbo delivers it with smoothness and precision.”

Kia Shows Design Direction for 2016 Optima Remake

New sedan set for NY Auto Show unveiling.

by on Mar.19, 2015

Kia continues to go edgy with the 2016 Optima remake.

Five years after making its debut at the New York Auto Show, Kia will lift the covers on a new version of the Optima sedan. And the Korean carmaker is hoping that the 2016 model will live up to the brand’s ad slogan, “The Power to Surprise.”

The outgoing Optima was a breakthrough car for Kia, transforming it from a stodgy, value-focused brand to one pushing the boundaries of design. Preliminary renderings released by Kia suggest that the new 2016 Optima will maintain its edginess.

Auto Show News!

The two images released by Kia pick up on many of the design cues first seen at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month in the form of the Kia Sportspace wagon concept. That show car picked up on the familiar Kia “tiger nose grille, giving it an almost slit-like appearance, with quad LED headlamps. Like the Sportspace, the Optima renderings show a coupe-like curve to the roofline, with bolder sheet metal creases than the current sedan, as well as muscularly flared wheel wells.
