Volvo Unveils Autonomous Concept 26 at LA Auto Show

Inside the Volvo Concept 26, the driver's seat laid back to snooze or watch TV.

Like it or not, autonomous vehicles appear to be right around the corner. And they’re likely to have a significant impact on the way we live our lives on the road.

But beyond having the ability to take our hands off the wheel, what exactly does that mean? That’s something Volvo aims to demonstrate with the debut of the Concept 26. The self-driving show car, the maker explains, offers a hint of “how luxury autonomous cars will integrate into daily life.”

“Volvo Concept 26 addresses the notion that driving can still be fun and liberating on the right day and on the right road,” says Anders Tylman-Mikiewicz, the general manager of Volvo’s Concept Center, where the prototype was developed.

But on the wrong day or the wrong road, autonomous vehicles can ease the strain of the daily commute which, “in many metro areas,” he adds, “is stressful, frustrating and even broken.”

Ford Betting on New Safety, Connectivity Tech to Boost Escape’s Appeal

Ford betting SUV update will deliver new sales records.

The 2016 Ford Escape gets a new grille and revised tail, though the focus is on technology.

It may be the maker’s smallest SUV, but it’s also the biggest seller, so Ford has a lot riding on the updated 2016 Escape it is launching at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show.

The mid-cycle “refresh” brings with it some modest visual updates but some major improvements in the compact crossover’s bag of digital tricks, with an assortment of new connectivity and safety features that include the latest version of Ford Sync, as well as forward collision warning and lane-keep assist.

“Stuffing in a lot of technology the customer doesn’t want isn’t the answer,” said Chris Mazur, the Escape’s global program manager. The challenge, he adds, was to “deploy the technology that has the most resonance with our customers.

Picking the Hottest Debuts at 2015 LA Auto Show

A first glimpse of the direction Hyundai will take with the next-generation Elantra.

The annual auto show season is just getting underway, with manufacturers set to kick things off in Frankfurt, Germany barely two weeks from now. Then the automotive circus will move on to Los Angeles, the first of the big U.S. extravaganzas.

And it looks like the 2015 L.A. Auto Show could be a big one, at least based on preliminary numbers suggesting there will be 50 vehicle unveilings, including 30 world debuts.

With the Frankfurt Motor Show still yet to begin, most automakers are being tight-lipped about Tinseltown plans, but Infiniti has already confirmed it will reveal the new QX30 – barely two months after showing its near-twin, the Q30, in Germany. Hyundai, meanwhile, will be on hand to unveil the next-generation Elantra line.
