Hyundai Tells Drivers to Park 2015 Sonata

Major brake problem forces recall; Toyota pressured to recall Camrys.

by on Jul.30, 2014

The 2015 Hyundai Sonata's being recalled for the second time since its introduction. This action involves faulty brakes.

Hyundai issued its second recall on its 2015 Sonata and ordered drivers to park the newly introduced sedan due to a problem with its brakes. At the same time, the pressure on Toyota to do the same with thousands of Camrys is ramping up.

The South Korean automaker is recalling 5,700 Sonatas built from April 25 to June 16 due to a manufacturing error that may cause either or both of the front brake calipers to fracture making it more difficult to stop the car. The fix requires replacement of the faulty brake calipers.

First Drive: 2015 Hyundai Sonata

“An athlete in a tailored suit.”

by on Jul.10, 2014

The 2015 Hyundai Sonata's styling may be toned down, but it remains a striking entry in a segment that has typically emphasized bland design.

First introduced in 1985, the Hyundai Sonata was a largely overlooked entry into the crowded midsize market, but that all changed with the launch of the 2011 sedan which quickly put to rest all those bad jokes and nasty reviews the Korean maker earned – often deservedly – during its early year in the U.S. market.

The sixth-generation Sonata broke the rather restrictive mold carmakers used when designing the midsized sedans. Instead of a drab, boxy silhouette, the recession-era Sonata was sleek, curvy and nicely proportioned. And it marked Hyundai’s coming of age as a serious global player – suddenly a serious challenger to top-rated Japanese brands such as Toyota and Nissan.

Reviews You Can Trust!

Now Hyundai is rolling out the Gen-7 Sonata for the 2015 model year, and while it has actually toned down the over-the-top styling that made the outgoing model a visual standout, the Korean carmaker intends to build on the value story that turned Sonata into a major hit for the company.

Hyundai Counts on Alabama Plant

Breaking bottlenecks is critical as the new 2015 Sonata rolls out.

by on Jun.30, 2014

The body of a new 2015 Hyundai Sonata rolls down the assembly line at the Alabama plant.

Hyundai has begun delivering the new 2015 Hyundai Sonata to dealers across America from its bustling assembly plant in Montgomery, Alabama, a factory stretched well beyond its rated capacity as the Korean carmaker struggles to keep up with consumer demand.

The Montgomery plant, which has 3,000 employees, now operates on three shifts five days per week and last year built a total of 398,000 vehicles – nearly 100,000 more than what it was built to handle when it opened a decade ago.

Dave Zuchowski, president and chief executive officer of Hyundai Motor America, noted the ability of the Montgomery plant to expand production beyond the rated capacity has been critical to Hyundai’s ability to meet customer demand in recent years.

Hyundai Takes Aim at Toyota with 2015 Sonata

New Korean sedan tones down styling, adds more features.

by on Apr.16, 2014

Hyundai's Dave Zuchowski introduces the new Sonata at the New York International Auto Show.

Not all that long ago, Hyundai was an afterthought in the competitive midsize sedan market, largely focusing on bargain hunting buyers. But all that changed, a few years back, when it introduced a stylish new remake of the Sonata sedan, the first model to showcase its distinctive “Fluidic Sculpture” design language.

For 2015, the Korean carmaker is rolling out an all-new version of the Sonata, and while it is toning down the previous model’s sometimes over-the-top angles and curves, Hyundai is growing more confident it can take on even some of the midsize segment’s most formidable players, notably including the Toyota Camry.

“The Sonata has been playing a key role in Hyundai Motor’s rapid growth in the global market, as well as leading the development of the Korean auto industry. We are confident that the all-new Sonata will change the landscape of the global midsize sedan market,” said Choong Ho Kim, the maker’s president and CEO, said when the all-new version was unveiled in South Korea last month. Now, U.S. buyers will have a chance to decide as the all-new Sonata makes its American debut at the New York Auto Show. (more…)

Hyundai Stepping up the Pace with Vehicle Debuts

New Genesis, Sonata expected to make an impact.

by on Apr.02, 2014

Hyundai is ready roll out the 2015 Genesis this month, while the Sonata will be available this summer.

After something of lull last year, Hyundai is preparing to replace two key vehicles, the Genesis and the Sonata, as it begins to pick up the pace of its product launches.

Dave Zuchowski, chief executive officer Hyundai Motor America, said the introduction of new vehicles was vital to Hyundai’s growth, following the 2008-2009 recession, “Our product cadence has been very aggressive and that’s contributed to our success,” he said. “We doubled our volume over the past five years.”

Even though the company’s expansion was slower last year, Hyundai’s sales still grew by a modest 2.5%. In addition, Hyundai’s standing with customers has steadily improved and they are also quick to recommend the brand to others. (more…)

First Official Look: 2015 Hyundai Sonata

Larger, more mature design, more new features.

by on Mar.24, 2014

Hyundai pulls the wraps off the all new 2015 Sonata during a preview in Korea.

It’s turning into a big year for the folks at Hyundai. Not only is the Korean carmaker set to start selling its next-generation Genesis luxury sedan, but it’s also getting ready to roll out an all-new version of the Sonata line.

Long an also-ran in the midsize segment, the outgoing Sonata was a real game-changer for Hyundai, showing that the maker could build more than just base econo-boxes.  It was surprisingly well-equipped for the segment, still reasonably affordable – and it introduced the maker’s distinctive Fluidic Sculpture design language.

Automotive Insight!

We got to see the updated styling approach, Fluidic Sculpture 2.0, with the new 2015 Hyundai Genesis, and the basic language carries over to the 2015 Hyundai Sonata, starting with the more distinctive grille, but also translating into a design that is a far bit more subdued – mature, if you prefer – than the over-the-top creases and curves of the outgoing midsize sedan.

Hyundai Experiences Déjà vu on Mileage Rating

Korean automaker overstates Sonata’s capability.

by on Mar.17, 2014

Hyundai is restating mileage numbers again. This time it accidentally handed out press materials for the new Sonata with the incorrect figure.

Like a relentless case of déjà vu, Hyundai is restating the mileage rating on another one of its vehicles. This time the 2014 Sonata sees its rating drop from 29.6 mpg to 28.4 mpg.

The new model went through a redesign and as part of that, the South Korean automaker tested the car at its facilities and actually determined the mileage to be 28.4 mpg; however, the number changed between the time of those results and press materials were developed. The company told media at its debut in South Korea that the mileage rating was 29.6 mpg.
