Honda Civic Type R Makes its Debut

Lap record holder for Nurburgring has no plans to come to US market.

by on Mar.04, 2015

Honda introduced the Civic Type R in Geneva.

Getting over to Switzerland for the annual Geneva Motor Show can be a wonderful experience checking out all the latest sheet metal. But there’s a downside when you discover a hot new model that won’t be coming back home.

Such is the case with the new Honda Civic Type R, a pint-sized performance car likely to set hearts to flutter for many U.S. buyers.

You're R Type!

How fast is it? Honda is claiming that a prototype version lapped grueling North loop of the Nurburgring in just 7:50.63, about four seconds faster than the previous record for a front-drive car set last year on the Nordschleife by a Renault Megane RS. If you focus on launch times, it reportedly can launch to 100 kmh, or 62.5 mph, in 5.7 seconds.

Audi Powers up the R8 e-tron, Takes Aims at Tesla

Extended-range electric vehicle with supercar performance.

by on Mar.04, 2015

The new Audi R8 e-tron shown on the maker's stage at the Geneva Motor Show. The new 2016 Audi R8 V10 Plus is in the background.

Tesla isn’t the only automaker out to prove that battery-cars can deliver serious levels of performance. After a long delay, Audi has revealed an all-electric version of its newly redesigned 2-seat sports car, the R8 e-tron.

Making its debut alongside the new, gas-powered R8, the e-tron tucks a T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack into the sports car’s low body, along with two electric motors. The combination not only can launch from 0 to 60 in less than four seconds, but it can deliver as much as 280 miles of range per charge, nearly triple what most of today’s electric vehicles can manage.

Plug In!

Likely to be priced above the rest of the new R8 line-up, Audi says it will produce a small number of largely hand-built e-trons “upon customer request” this coming year.

Ferrari Turbocharges Up its New 488 GTB

Replacement for Maranello’s old 458 downsizes engine, boosts power.

by on Mar.04, 2015

The new Ferrari 488 GTB opts for active aero and a new turbocharged V-8 engine.

Even Ferrari has to follow form, at times, as the Maranello maker is demonstrating with the Geneva Motor Show launch of the new 488 GTB.

The new model replaces the outgoing Ferrari 458, the smallest sports car in the line-up, and instead of going with an update of the 4.5-liter V-8, the new Ferrari 488 GTB gets a biturbo 3.9-liter eight-banger. But fret not at the downsizing. The new engine delivers significantly more horsepower and torque – enough to rival several other new models debuting nearby at the Geneva Motor Show, including the McLaren 675LT and Audi R8 V10 Plus.

Auto Show News!

“Extreme power was a requisite for the car,” the Italian maker explained as the Ferrari 488 GTB was introduced at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. The new model “drew extensively on its experience in both Formula One and endurance racing, bringing to the road the technology that delivered victory in two editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.”

Fiat Chrysler Could Seek New Alliances, Hints CEO Marchionne. Could Mazda, Apple be in the Plans?

Exec reveals new Mazda-made roadster will be named Fiat 124 Spider.

by on Mar.03, 2015

Would Fiat Chrysler consider opportunities to work with Apple or Google? "Obviously," said Marchionne.

Fiat Chrysler could seek to expand its list of outside alliances, CEO Sergio Marchionne said during a roundtable discussion at the Geneva Motor Show on Tuesday.

The maker is clearly pleased with the way things have gone in a partnership with Mazda. FCA worked with the Japanese maker on the upcoming Miata roadster replacement. And a second version will be sold through the Fiat brand as the reborn 124 Spider, Marchionne revealed.

Kia Sportspace Offers Clear Look at New Optima

U.S. sedan will borrow key cues from European wagon concept.

by on Mar.02, 2015

The Kia Sportspace Concept will heavily influence the design of the next-gen Optima sedan.

Ever since former Audi design chief Peter Schreyer came onboard, Kia has given meaning to its slogan, “The Power to Surprise.” Whether it’s the big K900 luxury sedan, the quirky Soul or the GT4 Stinger concept, the Korean carmaker has delivered some of the industry’s most intriguing styling exercises.

And it’s proving that point once again this week at the Geneva Motor Show this week where it will formally unveil the Kia Sportspace wagon concept. We got a first hint of what’s coming last month, and now the Asian maker has pulled the wraps off the Sportspace with a series of photos.

Design News!

And while the concept is clearly aimed at the European market, where wagons remain a highly popular body style, Americans motorists should take a close look at what, in sedan form, will be the next midsize Optima. Expect to see only a few modest changes when the production design reaches showrooms later this year.

The new Cayman GT4 seen lapping the Nurburgring.

The upcoming Geneva Motor Show is going to be one of the busiest ever, with automakers lining up to debut their latest products. And Porsche plans to use its time in the spotlight at Geneva’s PALExpo convention center to reveal two new high-performance models.

The pair includes the anticipated Porsche Cayman GT4, the maker’s first GT model based on a mid-engine coupe. The German sports carmaker has released some details about the new GT4, as well as a pair of shots grabbed while lapping the grueling Nurburgring track. But it’s keeping its second new offering a surprise to be revealed in Geneva.

Auto Show News and More!

The new Cayman GT4 is enough to catch one’s attention. Porsche says it turned an extremely impressive seven minute 40 second lap on the ‘Ring’s North Loop. That’s in line with what the previous generation Porsche 911 GT3 was able to accomplish.

Nissan Hopes to Sway Small Car Buyers with New Concept

Nissan Sway concept expected to reappear as the next Nissan Micra.

by on Feb.25, 2015

The Nissan Sway concept is believed to be a close-to-production design tease for the next Micra.

Nissan is out to prove that big things really can come in small packages, the maker offering up a first teaser image of the new Sway concept vehicle it plans to unveil at the Geneva Motor Show next week.

The small hatchback is expected to be a thinly disguised version of the next-generation Micra, according to several sources TheDetroitBureau.com spoke with. The Nissan Sway concept underscores the increasingly competitive nature of the minicar market, particularly in Europe, where buyers expect many of the same features, and much the same level of creature comfort, as they’d get in larger products.

“Sway is a glimpse at how a future generation of small Nissan models could look if the company’s striking new design language was applied to a European hatchback,” Nissan said in a short release accompanying the teaser image.

Rinspeed Budii Aims to “Redefine Relationship Between Man and Machine”

"Trans-urban concept car" designed to learn as it drives.

by on Dec.10, 2014

The Rinspeed Budii appears to be an autonomous take on the new BMW i3 electric vehicles.

With the first autonomous vehicles likely heading to showrooms within the next decade, there’s little doubt life on the road will begin to change.  But exactly how? That’s a question garnering a lot of attention these days.  If our cars can handle the morning commute on their own, what will we be doing during our morning commute?

One thing seems certain, self-driving vehicles will “redefine the relationship between man and machine,” suggests Frank Rinderknecht.

He’s better known as the visionary behind Rinspeed, a Swiss consulting firm that offers its take on the automobiles of the future with a series of concept vehicles that regularly appear at the annual Geneva Motor Show.

And the upcoming show will feature Rinspeed’s new Budii, which the firm calls a “trans-urban concept car.”

Subaru to Show Viziv 2 Concept Hybrid in Geneva

by on Feb.24, 2014

Subaru teases the new Viziv 2 concept...but won't say what's inside.

Subaru may have some big news in store for the Geneva Motor Show next month, the maker offering up a teaser of the next-generation Viziv Concept vehicle and hinting that it’ll have more to say about its hybrid plans.

To confuse things a bit, the Subaru Viziv 2 Concept is actually the third show car to use that name, following the earlier Viziv Concept and Viziv Evolution Concept, the latter unveiled only last November at the Tokyo Motor Show.

We'll Keep You Behind the Wheel!

Subaru was slow to the hybrid game, only recently introducing its first model, a gas-electric version of the XV Crosstrek.  But it has hinted there’s more to come – and perhaps we’ll learn a bit when the Viziv 2 makes its debut at Geneva’s PALExpo convention center on March 4th.
