New Boss Aims to Transform Acura into Luxury Leader

New products, new technologies needed to get "butts in seats."

by on Apr.24, 2014

Considering the cost of bringing a car to market, every new vehicle is important, but few more so than the 2014 Acura TLX making its first public appearance at the New York Auto Show this week.

Acura has scored a pair of solid hits with its two SUV models, the RDX and bigger MDX, but as the third sedan in the Acura line-up, the TLX is meant to fill a critical gap between the Japanese maker’s entry-level ILX and its recently added flagship, the RLX.  It’s no easy challenge, going up against a range of major competitors such as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5-Series and Lexus GS lines.

In the Know!

The TLX is “critically important,” suggests Mike Accavitti, the long-time Chrysler executive who was recently named head of the Acura division. “We have to start somewhere,” he adds.”

Muscle Cars Muscle Their Way Into the Big Apple

Mustang, Challenger, Charger – and some high-powered imports – dominate 2014 NY Auto Show.

by on Apr.18, 2014

Yes, it has a Hemi, the newly updated 2015 Dodge Charger is one of many new models muscling in at the New York Auto Show.

Marking the 50th anniversary of its original introduction at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, an all-new Mustang is waiting to greet visitors at the NY Auto Show opening this week.

But Ford’s redesigned pony car isn’t the only offering putting the emphasis on performance at an annual event that had, in recent years, been more focused on battery cars and other green machines.  While there are a number of new, fuel-efficient products on display, muscle cars have muscled their way to dominance on the floor of the Jacob Javits Convention Center on New York’s West Side.

Muscle Up!

From Detroit, there’s not only the new 2015 Ford Mustang, but a pair of muscle cars from rival Fiat Chrysler’s Dodge Division. And General Motors, which had a hit with the all-new Corvette Stingray shown in NY last year is back with the upgraded Chevrolet Corvette Z06, which is expected to add nearly 200 horsepower – coming in at an estimated 625 hp – when it reaches showrooms early next year.

Alfa Quiet About Big News in the Big Apple

No news conference, but Italian maker marks its return to U.S. market.

by on Apr.17, 2014

An Ala Romeo 4C beckons NY Auto Show visitors.

Alfa Romeo is giving New York the silent treatment – which might seem odd considering it’s on display at this year’s New York Auto Show for the first time in years as it prepares its long-awaited return to the American market.

The maker had several products on display at NY’s Jacob Javits Convention Center but decided to forego staging a formal news conference, apparently due to the high cost of such an event, several sources told TheDetroitBureau.com. But they stressed that the Fiat Chrysler subsidiary is firmly on track for its planned mid-year resurrection – which comes more than two decades after it pulled out of the States.

Product News!

The Italian maker, long known for its sleek and sexy sports cars and other high-line models, will initially focus on the 4C in its bid for a U.S. rival. That’s a curvaceous little two-seater that will initially be offered at around $70,000, Alfa choosing to emphasize a heavily loaded version likely to appeal to “Alfisti” who have been clamoring for the brand’s return.

BMW Reveals Array of New Models

Focus is on performance.

by on Apr.17, 2014

BMW board member Ian Robertson behind the wheel of the new M4 Convertible.

With nearly 60 different products making their U.S. or global debut at this year’s New York Auto Show, nearly every major automaker – and quite a few smaller ones – has something to show off this month.

But BMW has a disproportionate presence on the list, with the Bavarian automaker putting a particular emphasis on performance.  But the maker is also giving a hint as to its possible plans to roll out a battery-based version of its big X5 Sport Activity Vehicle.

Auto Show News!

“This is a year for BMW to set significant milestones,” said Ian Robertson, the BMW board member overseeing global sales. It’s already pulled off one, delivering a record 487,000 vehicles during the first quarter of the year worldwide, and the company – which includes brands BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce — is “aiming for a significant increase to a record of over 2 million” vehicles for all of 2014.

BMW Powers Up with Concept X5 eDrive Plug-In Hybrid

Car-like mileage from a big SUV.

by on Apr.16, 2014

Dubbed the Concept X5 eDrive, BMW calls it a Sport Activity Vehicle instead of an SUV.

Big sport-utility vehicles may yield plenty of room and power, but they aren’t exactly known for delivering great mileage. Now, BMW wants to change that equation with a new version of its SUV – make this Sport Activity Vehicle – the X5.

While production plans are still up in the air, the maker offered a handful of journalists the opportunity to drive the X5 Plug-in Hybrid prior to the official opening of the 2014 New York Auto Show at the company’s U.S. headquarters in North New Jersey. And if the prototype is any indication of what may follow, a potential buyer might expect to see fuel economy in the range of 40 miles per gallon.

Electrifying!

For now dubbed the Concept X5 eDrive, the battery-based plug-in would provide an alternative to the current diesel-powered X5 – but industry planners say the two high-mileage systems would have distinctly different niches: plug-ins better for commuting, diesels for regularly drive longer distances. Mad Men’s Don Draper Lusts for Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe

Actor Jon Hamm helps unveil new luxury coupe at NY Auto Show.

by on Apr.16, 2014

Actor Jon Hamm and Mercedes-Benz USA President Steve Cannon unveil the new S63 AMG Coupe.

Too bad for Don Draper that he’d be long retired by now. Had he stuck around, the fictional advertising executive in the popular TV series Mad Men would have been ponying up his paycheck to purchase one of the new Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupes that is making its debut at the New York International Auto Show.

Or so says Jon Hamm, the actor who portrays the handsome and worldly Draper – but who also provides voiceovers for the German maker. Initially hidden behind the scenes during Mercedes’ auto show news conference, Hamm came out on stage to help unveil the new luxury coupe with Mercedes-Benz USA President Steve Cannon.

Clearly enjoying the assignment, Hamm said, “I can promise you if we were doing Mad Men today, I would put it into my contract that Don Draper would drive this car.”

It would probably take someone in his position as co-owner of a Madison Avenue ad agency. While Mercedes has yet to reveal the price of the C63 AMG 4Matic Coupe, the model it replaces started at $154,600 – plus delivery charges.

Hyundai Takes Aim at Toyota with 2015 Sonata

New Korean sedan tones down styling, adds more features.

by on Apr.16, 2014

Hyundai's Dave Zuchowski introduces the new Sonata at the New York International Auto Show.

Not all that long ago, Hyundai was an afterthought in the competitive midsize sedan market, largely focusing on bargain hunting buyers. But all that changed, a few years back, when it introduced a stylish new remake of the Sonata sedan, the first model to showcase its distinctive “Fluidic Sculpture” design language.

For 2015, the Korean carmaker is rolling out an all-new version of the Sonata, and while it is toning down the previous model’s sometimes over-the-top angles and curves, Hyundai is growing more confident it can take on even some of the midsize segment’s most formidable players, notably including the Toyota Camry.

“The Sonata has been playing a key role in Hyundai Motor’s rapid growth in the global market, as well as leading the development of the Korean auto industry. We are confident that the all-new Sonata will change the landscape of the global midsize sedan market,” said Choong Ho Kim, the maker’s president and CEO, said when the all-new version was unveiled in South Korea last month. Now, U.S. buyers will have a chance to decide as the all-new Sonata makes its American debut at the New York Auto Show. (more…)

Toyota Delivers Major Mid-Cycle Update for Camry

Japanese giant aims to keep its king-of-the-hill status.

by on Apr.16, 2014

Bill Fay is group vice president and general manager of the Toyota division at Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., introduced the new Toyota Camry at the New York International Auto Show today.

This story has been updated to include new information.

Few vehicles have consistently dominated the competition as the Toyota Camry has, so one might traditionally expect it to deliver only the most modest of mid-cycle updates. But the 2015 Camry “refresh” is anything if conservative. The Japanese giant has rolled out an unexpectedly significant update that seems bound and determined to help Camry maintain its position as America’s best-selling passenger car.

Until recently, that dominance would seem hard to question, but Camry has been facing threats from a variety of fronts, including the Ford Fusion, the Nissan Altima – which actually claimed brief sales leadership in January and February – and from the Hyundai Sonata which is undergoing a major redesign that’s also debuting at this year’s New York Auto Show.

Auto Show News!

Toyota got a sign that the market was shifting when it launched the current version of the Camry in late 2011. It received an unexpectedly cold response from dealers who saw an early prototype barely 18 months before launch, a big chill severe enough to force the maker to rush through a number of exterior changes late in the game.

So, this time, the maker isn’t taking any chances, and claims to have “re-imagined nearly every exterior surface of the car,” to the point where the only carryover piece of sheet metal is the roof.

“This is the biggest segment in the industry and everybody is upping their game,” said Toyota division general manager Bill Fay, noting that almost 2,000 different parts have been changed for 2015.

Audi Adds TDI Sportback to A3 Line-Up

Diesel will join plug-in hybrid version of new wagon.

by on Apr.16, 2014

Audi is adding two new vehicles to its A3 lineup: a Sportback diesel and a Sportback e-tron, which is a plug-in hybrid.

The latest-generation Audi A3 has only just gone on sale but the German maker is already expanding the range of offerings for the small car line.

That will now include two high-mileage versions of the A3 Sportback – or wagon, if you prefer. A diesel version will roll into showrooms next year, joining the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron, the maker’s new plug-in hybrid.

The Leader in Global Automotive News

The fact that Audi will soon have two versions of the Sportback in the entry-level A3 line-up is significant considering it seemed bound and determined to abandon the wagon for the U.S. market not all that long ago.  But it got a different message from prior owners. (more…)

Chevrolet Makes Trax for NY

After long delay, compact crossover finally is coming to US.

by on Apr.16, 2014

GM CEO Mary Barra introduces the new Chevy Trax: the company's first small crossover-utility vehicle at the New York Auto Show.

Chevrolet is making tracks for New York. More precisely, it’s showing off the new Chevy Trax crossover-utility vehicle at the 2014 NY Auto Show.

Small SUVs make up one of the world’s fastest-growing product segments, but until recently, General Motors planners didn’t think there was enough market in the U.S. for the Trax which has been on sale in much of the rest of the world for the last several years.

Stay on Top!

But with a growing number of competitors targeting this niche, the corporate bean-counters finally decided to give the little Chevy crossover a green light, and Trax will land in U.S. showrooms by early next year – if not sooner. (more…)
