VW Hopes All-New Golf Will Reignite Sputtering U.S. Sales

Compact models set to debut this spring.

by on Feb.07, 2014

The sporty Golf R model.

Volkswagen of America is hoping the introduction of the all-new GTI and Golf models — as well as revisions to the Jetta — slated to reach in showrooms this spring will help reignite the brand’s sputtering sales in the U.S. market.

The seventh-generation Golf is already a hit in Europe but VW decided to delay its North American launch a year, a move many analysts believe contributed to a sharp decline in its U.S. sales last year after several years of rapid growth.

News You Can Use!

The surge began in 2010 and saw VW sell more than 400,000 units in the American market for the first time in 40 years. But progress stalled last year as sales plunged 7% despite the overall U.S. market reaching its highest point since before the recession began.  The downturn was considered a major factor behind the ouster of Volkswagen Group of America CEO Jonathan Browning, even though the maker’s smaller Audi brand achieved a Cinderella-like comeback that saw it set all-time U.S. sales records.

Volvo Introduces “All Weather, All Season” Polestar Performance Cars

Limited edition S60, V60 variants reach showrooms by summer.

by on Feb.07, 2014

Volvo's new S60 and V60 Polestar models debut at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show.

Following in the footsteps of luxury rivals such as Mercedes-Benz with its AMG line and BMW with its M-Series, Volvo is rolling out the quickest factory Volvos ever. But the Swedish says it is taking a different approach with the V60 and S60 Polestar models, describing them as “all weather, all seasons” performance cars.

Production of the unique Polestar cars will be limited. Only 120 of the V60 sportswagon and S60 sedan will be available in the U.S., according to representatives from Volvo and Polestar.

Your Performance Source!

While Polestar has been transforming Volvo products into track models since 1996 and producing performance parts for various models over the years, this will be the first time specific models will carry the Polestar designation, Tony Nicolosi, Volvo USA chief executive officer, said after the Volvo press conference at the Chicago Auto Show.

Toyota Goes to Extremes with New TRD Pro Series Trucks

Modified trucks designed to push the limits.

by on Feb.06, 2014

A TRD Pro Tundra goes through its paces.

Toyota wants to kick up some dust with its newest TRD Pro Series of off-road trucks.  Targeting buyers who hope to push the limits with their Tundra, Tacoma and 4Runner models, the TRD versions were specially developed by the maker’s motorsports division, Toyota Racing Development, and bear the fruits of successful off-road racing programs like the Baja 1000.

Keep on Track!

TRD has been tuning Toyota trucks for more than four decades, with the performance arm establishing a U.S. base in Costa Mesa, California in 1979.

TRD models are designed to be put to serious use off-road, though Toyota claims they have plenty of street cred, as well.

Kia Niro Concept Hints at Possible Urban Hybrid Vehicle

Show car features electric all-wheel-drive system.

by on Feb.06, 2014

The Kia Niro Concept uses a new B-segment platform likely to soon show up in production.

While a teaser image of the new Kia Niro suggests the show car is capable of doing some serious off-roading, the Korean maker is really exploring the possibilities of a “cutting-edge urban hybrid vehicle.”

Making its debut at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show, the prototype “hints at” something Kia clearly has under development, a small, high-mileage crossover that would target younger, environmentally minded buyers living in urban environments much like the Windy City.

The goal is to come up with something that has more attitude and a more fun-to-drive feel than the typically stodgy hybrids of today that seem focused only on maximizing mileage.

Fuel for Thought!

“Ten years ago people wanted understated style in the SUV market, but increasingly, as more people migrate to the B-segment, they are looking for strong character and individuality,” said Gregory Guillaume, Chief Designer at Kia’s Frankfurt, Germany-based Design Center Europe which developed the Niro concept.

Kia Joins Battery Brigade With New Soul EV

Limited sales begin later this year.

by on Feb.06, 2014

Kia's first battery-car, the Soul EV, goes on sale during the third quarter, but only in a handful of markets.

Korean carmaker Kia is the latest to plug-into the growing market for battery-electric vehicles, introducing the all-new 2015 Kia Soul EV at the Chicago Auto Show.

The Soul is one of three battery-based models Kia is showing at this year’s event in the Windy City, the maker also rolling out an updated version of its Optima Hybrid sedan, as well as the new Niro Hybrid Concept.

Keeping You Plugged In!

Most major automakers have, or soon plan to add plug-based vehicles to their U.S. model lines – at least in part due to the strict new Zero-Emission Vehicle, or ZEV standards going into effect in California and a handful of other states.  But while sales have fallen well short of proponents’ expectations, plug-in hybrids and pure battery-electric vehicles, or BEVs, generated just short of 100,000 sales last year, an all-time record.
