Toyota Lends a Hand to Flying Car Project

Japanese automaker puts up $353,000 for group.

Toyota has put up $353,000 to help fund the Cartivator, a flying car concept being developed by a group of employees.

Toyota Motor is putting up $353,000 to help a group of young employees to develop a flying car.

The project, led by a group called Cartivator, started in 2012 when project leader Tsubasa Nakamura and some employees began volunteering their time for the project. The group now has more than 30 members.

Drone technology is being used to power the three-wheeled prototypes, which measure just nine-and-a-half feet by four feet, and have a projected top speed of 62 mph, according to the Nikkei Asian Review. (more…)

Can anything top Tesla, the California electric vehicle manufacturer that this week topped General Motors in terms of its market capitalization and which hopes to deliver a five-fold increase in sales between 2016 and 2018?

Some folks are pointing to another small battery-car start-up, Lucid Motors, as the most serious challenger. The start-up made a splashy debut at the New York International Auto Show on Thursday, previewing not only a prototype of the production car it hopes to bring to market in 2019, but also a test vehicle that recently clocked a record 217 mph test track run.

Lucid’s numbers are certainly impressive, the production model expected to punch out 1,000 horsepower from a pair of electric motors, one driving the front axle, the other on the rear, creating what is sometimes called a through-the-road all-wheel-drive system. (more…)

Ford Recalling 285,000 Vehicles

Automaker issues action for transmission, suspension and airbag problems.

Ford's Police Interceptor Utility is part of a recall of SUVs due to suspension issues.

Ford is recalling more than 280,000 sport-utility vehicles and pickup trucks due to suspension and transmission issues.

The Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker will recall 201,900 pickups due to a flaw in the transmission. A faulty speed sensor can cause it to downshift into first gear at the wrong time, potentially causing the driver to lose control or affect the vehicles around it.

Thus far, the automaker is aware of three accidents that have occurred due to the sensor on transmission model6R80. It is found on 2011-12 Ford F-150, 2012 Expedition and Mustangs built in Michigan from Aug. 19, 2011 through Feb. 12, 2012. (more…)

Honda's CR-V is one reason why crossovers and sport-utiliies are outselling sedans for the first time ever.

New vehicle sales are still red hot and sport-utility vehicles are among the vehicles generating the heat these days, in particular compact SUVs.

Small SUVs offer buyers a lot of upside: elevated ride height and four-wheel drive capability as well as good gas mileage allowing buyers to hedge against a return to gas prices above $3 a gallon some day.

GM’s UAW Workers Earn Up to $11K in Profit Sharing

GM's UAW hourly workforce can get as much as $11,000 each in profit sharing this year.

General Motors Co. employees are getting as much as $11,000 each in profit sharing in the wake of the company’s record profits in 2015, while top GM executives said the outlook for 2016 remains very promising.

That exceeds last year’s $9,300 enjoyed by UAW workers. However, Mary Barra, GM’s chairman and chief executive officer, tempered expectations telling analysts that GM is confident that the demand vehicles is at a peak and will begin to drop.

Ford Makes Moves to Improve Safety: Recalls 425K, Cuts Takata

Ford is recalling 425,000 Ford Fusions and Mercury Milans from 2010 and 2011 due to a fuel tank issue.

Ford is facing two safety issues and dealing with one by fixing the problem and the other by eliminating the source: Takata.

The automaker is recalling about 450,000 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan from the 2010 and 2011 model years due to a fuel tank issue.

Some of the vehicles may have a canister purge valve that does not work correctly. The problem can lead to internal pressure changes that could lead to a crack, leaked fuel and a possibly a fire if that fuel meets an ignition source. Thus far, the maker is unaware of any accidents, injuries or fires due to the problem. (more…)

Latest Honda Airbag Recall Lengthens Shadow of Product Doubt

Industry tracking to beat last year record-setting recall year of 64 million.

The 2008 Honda Accord is part of another recall for faulty airbags. The maker is recalling 300,000 of the vehicles from 2008 and 2009.

If you own a Honda Accord, don’t slam that door too hard. The Japanese automaker is recalling 300,000 of the cars from 2008 and 2009 because the side-impact airbags may deploy if the door is “forcefully slammed.”

There have been 19 complaints about the issue, which the maker blamed on an incorrect sensor calibration. The problem affects both the air curtains, which are in the roof above the side windows and provide head protection, and airbags in the side of the seat that protect the torso.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration started investigating the problem last year due to the complaints, which included several instances of the automaker refusing to pay for the repair. (more…)

With new vehicle sales going strong in 2015, much of the focus has been on pricey vehicles like full-size trucks, small luxury crossovers and SUVs. Some of these vehicles can surpass the $60K mark.

Ford Recalls 390K Vehicles for Door Latch Problem

Latest action puts number at 1.4 million with latch issues.

Ford is recalling 2012-2104 Fiestas for door latch problems. The maker has recalled 1.4 million vehicles due to latch issues.

Ford continues to battle problems with door latches recalling 390,000 late model Fiestas, Fusions and MKZs.

Door latch problems have been a running dilemma for the automaker and the latest action raises the total number of vehicles recalled for them to 1.4 million.
