Volkswagen CEO Mueller Likely to Be Replaced by VW Brand Boss Diess

Mueller helped company weather diesel scandal, but Diess seen as change agent.

by on Apr.11, 2018

Prior to being tapped to head VW after its diesel scandal broke, Matthias Mueller ran Porsche.

Volkswagen Group CEO Matthias Mueller is expected to be forced out at a management meeting Friday, with VW brand boss Herbert Diess expected to replace him, according to reports out of Germany.

The shake-up, which has apparently been in the works for months, has the blessing of some of VW’s top shareholders, as well as its chairman and powerful labor chief. It will mark the most extensive management moves since shortly after the automaker’s diesel emissions scandal broke in September 2015.

Global Business News!

VW issued a short statement noting it is considering “a further development of the management structure of the group which would also be associated with personnel changes in the board of management.” The statement hinted that changes under study “could include” the naming of a new CEO, adding that Mueller himself “showed his willingness to contribute,” suggesting the 64-year-old executive might voluntarily step aside rather than fight to retain his post. He is currently under a contract set to continue through 2020.

BMW’s Access Follows Leaders in Luxury Leasing

Brand becomes latest to offer subscription service.

by on Apr.04, 2018

Ian Smith, BMW's chief executive officer of BMW Group Financial Services, will oversee Access by BMW, which starts in Nashville.

The old adage states that there are no original ideas and proving that one more time is Access by BMW, the brand revealed it will become the latest automaker to introduce a new subscription-based leasing plan.

The maker is using the app-based program to allow consumer to drive its top performance cars for as much as $3,700 a month. The new service kicks off this week in Nashville, Tennessee, and allows users unlimited access to cars.

Subscribe for Free!

The most expensive plan, the $3,700 version, permits users access to the company’s M-class cars and is appropriately dubbed the “M” tier, giving them access to the BMW M4 convertible, the all-new M5, BMW M6 convertible, as well as the BMW X5M and BMW X6M Sports Activity Vehicles. (more…)

Luxury Plug-Ins Shift Emphasis on Performance

Emphasis shifts from mileage.

by on Apr.02, 2018

The production Aviator's fastest powertrain package will pair a turbo-six with electric drive.

When the first hybrids came to market nearly two decades ago, the emphasis was on mileage, the original Honda Insight delivering as much as 70 miles per gallon, albeit at the expense of what might be described as the fun-to-drive factor.

That approach carried over as more advanced, battery-based models came to market – and as luxury brands started to plug in with vehicles like the Cadillac ELR. Based on the Mainstream Chevrolet Volt, Caddy’s first plug-in hybrid was lavishly equipped but took almost 10 seconds to get from 0 to 60.

Performance News!

A visit to this year’s New York Auto Show will reveal a wide array of PHEVs, and among mass market brands, like Chevy, Honda, Hyundai and Toyota, fuel economy is still the primary target. But it’s another matter entirely among luxury brands, such as BMW, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo. There’s no question they’re also using battery power to boost mileage, but they’re also putting a premium on performance.

Perhaps no automaker better takes an iconic vehicle and tweaks it everso slightly to the squealing delight of a dedicated fan base than Porsche and its 911. For 2019, Porsche is adding the Weissach Package to the 911 GT3 RS model.

Based on the 911 GT3 RS just unveiled in Geneva, the optional Weissach Package is available for the first time on a 911 GT3 RS model and complements the most powerful naturally aspirated road-going 911 ever with additional lightweight components, Porsche notes.

Sports Car News!

Naturally, there’s a price for such subtle visual changes: $18,000 for the Weissach Package, which helps the 4.0-liter 520 horsepower flat six push the car from 0-to-60 mph in less than three seconds. (more…)

Mercedes Joins Growing List of Subscription Car Programs

Flexperience to debut in Germany before coming to U.S. market.

by on Mar.23, 2018

The new Mercedes Flexperience program will let customers swap between a wide range of models up to 12 times annually.

It’s hard to find a single carmaker that doesn’t offer a Certified Pre-Owned program and it may soon become the norm, rather than the exception, for manufacturers to add subscription services to their list of retail alternatives.

Mercedes-Benz is set to become the latest manufacturer to jump onboard, following Audi, Cadillac, Porsche and Volvo, while Lexus this week indicated it is also exploring its subscription options.

The Last Word!

The automaker has been running a pilot program in Germany that is about to formally roll out across its home market, and “We plan to have something ready within this year” for the U.S., Mercedes’ global sales chief Britta Seeger announced this week.

VW Developing Unique, Premium EV Platform for Porsche, Audi, Bentley

BMW goes the opposite direction, abandoning electric-only platform strategy.

by on Mar.09, 2018

The Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo is just a "study" for now, but expect a production version to follow.

The Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo is one of the big hits of this year’s Geneva Motor Show and while officially a concept vehicle, the battery-electric crossover is expected to soon follow into production the Mission E coupe launching next year.

Both cars will ride on a specially developed platform, dubbed J1. Meanwhile, sibling brand Audi’s upcoming E-tron Quattro battery-car will use the same MLB architecture as its more mainstream models, like the A4, as well as the new Bentley Bentayga SUV.

Electrifying News!

But, going forward, Those three luxury brands are partnering up to develop an entirely new and unique platform they will share for all future electric vehicles, according to a senior company official. Codenamed PPE, for Premium Platform Electric, it will go into all Audi, Bentley and Porsche electric vehicles from 2022 on.

Jaguar I-Pace Pricing Undercuts Tesla Model X

British EV SUV will match base range but falls short on acceleration.

by on Mar.07, 2018

Jaguar now has three SUVs in its line-up, though only the I-Pace is electrified.

Jaguar’s first-ever battery-electric vehicle will start at $70,495 – including delivery charges — when it reaches U.S. showrooms later this year, about $9,000 less than the Tesla Model S.

The British maker is giving the public a first close look at its first-ever battery-electric vehicle at the Geneva Motor Show this week. The I-Pace will soon join Jaguar’s expanding list of sport-utility vehicles which also includes the conventionally powered F-Pace and E-Pace models.

New Product News!

“We set out with a clean sheet approach to harness new battery electric technology with an architecture engineered from the outset to optimize EV performance, aerodynamics and interior space. The result is the I-PACE – a true Jaguar and a truly driver-focused EV,” Ian Hoban, Jaguar’s Vehicle Line Director, said during a media preview last week.

First Look: Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo

Mission E battery-car takes on a new SUV shape.

by on Mar.06, 2018

The Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo is just a "study" for now, but expect a production version to follow.

Few marques have been more willing to buck tradition than Porsche. True, performance is the brand’s hallmark, but starting with the launch of the original Cayenne SUV, the Stuttgart-based carmaker has repeatedly pushed beyond its comfort zone.

As radical as a Porsche SUV might once have seemed, however, that was nowhere near as radical as the decision to launch an all-electric sports car, the Mission E barely than a year away from production. And, as we learned today at the Geneva Motor Show, that battery sports car is likely to soon have a companion in the form of Mission E Cross Turismo.

Product News!

‘The Mission E Cross Turismo is an expression of how we envision the all-electric future. It combines sportiness and everyday practicality in unique style,” said Porsche AG CEO Oliver Blume. “Our vehicle will be fast to drive, but also quick to recharge and able to replicate its performance time after time.”

VW Confirms New I.D. Vizzion Concept Will Reach Showrooms “By 2022 at the Latest”

Electric sedan will eventually add full autonomy.

by on Mar.05, 2018

The Vizzion Concept is set to become the fourth model in the new Volkswagen I.D. sub-brand.

Volkswagen has rolled out the fourth in a series of concept vehicles meant to preview the all-electric I.D. family it will launch by the end of this decade and, as with earlier models like the Crozz and Buzz, you can expect to see the big I.D. Vizzion sedan roll into showrooms “by 2022 at the latest,” the automaker said, at the big sedan’s official Geneva Motor Show debut.

Something of a battery-electric replacement for the VW brand’s old flagship, the Phaeton, the I.D. Vizzion concept offers a range of cutting-edge technologies, as well as an interior that can be transformed into a mobile living room when operating in fully autonomous mode.

Product News!

“The I.D. VIZZION shows what our brand is capable of in terms of technology, design and quality,” said VW brand boss Herbert Diess, during a showcase of new products by the various marques operated by the parent Volkswagen Group. “ It is the most personal, most emotional and most individual Volkswagen of all times. And it also shows that, even in the electric, self-driving future, we will be using desirable, expressive and individual automobiles – and not just uniform tin boxes.”

Opinion: Mid-Engine Corvette: Too Little, Too Late?

Our veteran spy photographer says electric drive is the way to go.

by on Mar.02, 2018

Off to a rocky start? Our spy photographer thinks GM is on the wrong path with its mid-engine Vette.

Drop the mid-engine Corvette. Now.

It’s time for GM to stop its development of an icon vehicle, the 20?? mid-engine Corvette. Yes, the long, long overdeveloped car that has diverted GM’s innovational (?) attention for over 25 years. The car could be way behind what is happening in the 2-seat racing-type model of today.

Automotive Insight!

Huge changes are ongoing in the automobile business. We all see that. Car companies are formed and reformed, replaced, absorbed. New technologies are in huge development – autonomous cars and trucks are surely on the way. Electrics are moving – in some instances, shoved – on the scene, replacing the internal combustion engine.
