The turnstiles are spinning at the Javits Convention Center and for good reason. The 2018 New York International Auto Show is winning raves as the year’s most significant North American event, with dozens of significant debuts.

This year’s NAIAS covered plenty of ground: from long-range electric vehicles to high-powered performance cars – even some high-performance electric vehicles. Followers of automotive design will have plenty to talk about, too. The show underscores all the dramatic changes sweeping through the auto industry, even on the retail side, as more manufacturers announce new subscription programs.

Subaru Viziv Tourer Concept: An Outback Wagon Replacement?

Subaru executives are excited about the new Viziv Tourer Concept shown at the Geneva Motor Show.

Subaru continued its themed concept cars with the Viziv Tourer concept at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. The first Viziv concept debuted in 2013 and since then each model has taken on a different them.

This year’s Tourer concept gave Subaru the opportunity to unite symmetrical all-wheel-drive powered by a boxer engine with performance, practicality and functionality to entice people to enjoy traveling by car again.

Audi Unleashes New A6 in Geneva

Eighth-generation sedan features radical new technology.

The eighth-generation Audi A6 made its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

When Audi finds something that works, it sticks with it. Such is the case with the new A6 that enjoyed its world premiere in Geneva. The newly introduced sport sedan is now its eighth generation.

The company calls the A6 “a distinguished ambassador for the new Audi design language.”

Which is to say that the differences between the seventh-gen A6 and the new model won’t be dramatic. It still features simple, clear edges and surfaces that aren’t fussy. It’s sporty without being a sports car and it just screams quality. (more…)

Kia’s K900 Sticking Around – and Here’s a First Look

Expect to see the Kia K900 debut at the New York International Auto Show later this month.

Reports of the demise of the big Kia K900 luxury sedan? Well, you know what Mark Twain would say: they’ve been greatly exaggerated.

With the overwhelming response to the new Stinger, there’s no question that Kia is putting a lot of emphasis on that sexy new GT model. But company insiders have repeatedly emphasized to TheDetroitBureau.com that the K900 isn’t going away. And if you needed proof, check out these two renderings of the second-generation sedan that is expected to make a debut appearance in the coming weeks an roll into showrooms by mid-year.

To further underscore its longevity, consider that the new model was a collaborative development pairing Kia’s global design headquarters in the Seoul suburb of Namyang, along with the automaker’s U.S. design center in Irvine, California.

Lexus Turns Urban Explorer with new UX Compact Crossover

Luxury brand finally fills hot-selling hole in its line-up.

The new Lexus UX 250h launched today at the Geneva Motor Show.

Lexus is making the jump into the compact crossover, or urban crossover as it calls it, with the new UX that made its debut in Geneva.

In addition to being the luxury brand’s first entry in the hot-selling compact utility segment, the UX is the first vehicle to uses the brand’s new GA-C, or Global Architecture – Compact, platform. The new base is extremely rigid and has a low center of gravity improving the ride and handling of the new UX.

VW Squashing the Beetle at End of Current Generation

Get ready to say buh-bye to the Beetle. Oh, you didn’t know they were still building it? Well, that may explain why Volkswagen is getting set to phase out the once-iconic coupe when the current, third-generation model reaches the end of its lifecycle.

Now, Volkswagen wouldn’t be Volkswagen without at least one icon in its line-up, but Frank Welsch, the brand’s R&D chief, told Britain’s Autocar that the focus will shift to the soon-to-be-reborn I.D. Buzz, an all-electric take on the classic Volkswagen Microbus that is due to market early in the coming decade.

Noting that VW tried to revive the Bug with the “New Beetle,” and then redid it one more time, Welsch said enough is enough. “You can’t do it five times and have a new, new, new Beetle,” ad infinitum. In fact, the VW board did consider a way to keep the Beetle alive, but it turned thumbs down to the idea of an all-electric version during a product meeting last November.

Polestar’s First EV Looks Like Modern Take on Classic Volvo P1800

The Volvo P1800 reborn? Not quite. This is the all-new Polestar 1 performance PHEV.

It started out as a motorsports contender then went on to become Volvo’s in-house performance tuner. But with the debut of the Polestar 1 at this week’s Geneva Motor Show, Polestar formally transitions into Volvo’s high-performance sub-brand.

And it will focus exclusively on vehicles with electrified drivetrains. The Polestar 1 features a twin-motor plug-in hybrid coupe churning out an impressive 600 horsepower. Pure battery-electric offerings will follow, company officials said, while adding that they plan to take a novel approach to selling their low-volume, high-performance offerings.

“We will focus on electric mobility and make it a reality by having something that is not just a dogmatic electric vehicle but something that is desirable to drive,” said Thomas Ingenlath, the former head of Volvo design who, late last year, was reassigned to run Polestar.

BMW unwrapped the latest piece of automotive eye candy from its Munich studios, the BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe, at the Geneva Motor Show.

“The BMW 8 Series will take over as the new flagship model of the BMW line-up and, as such, combines unsurpassed sportiness and elegance,” said Adrian van Hooydonk, senior vice president, BMW Group Design.
