New Camaro SS to Make NY Debut

More muscle with mid-cycle refresh.

by on Mar.20, 2013

Chevy offers a modest tease of the 2014 Camaro SS.

Spend a bit of time scouring the web and you’ll find a surprising amount of information – and mis-information – about Chevrolet’s plans for the Camaro.

According to some reports from recent months, GM’s largest brand was going to skip the mid-cycle refresh in favor of an all-new pony car to come for 2015 – apparently timed to directly take on Ford’s 50th anniversary Mustang.

Geared Up for News!

While we’re still trying to get details on the gen-6 Camaro we can now confirm that there will, indeed, be a mid-cycle update of the current, fifth-generation model, with the debut of the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro scheduled for a week from today at the New York Auto Show.

Beyond that, Chevy is holding tight on details and offering up just a splash of superlatives.

What we’ll see in New York, in particular, will be the Camaro SS model, “completing the line of new performance vehicles Chevrolet will offer for 2014.”  As you’re well aware, we’ve already had a good look at both the Corvette Coupe and Convertible, and we’re also going to be in the Big Apple to get up-close and personal with the new Chevrolet SS, the bowtie brand’s first V-8-powered rear-drive performance sedan since 1996.

The latter will be based on an Australian-designed global platform and powered by a 6.2-liter eight-banger throttling out about 415 horsepower.

But back to the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS.  What’s in store?  The teaser image shown here certainly tell us a lot beyond the seemingly minor grille tweaks. But spy shots circulating in recent weeks also suggest there will be some modest body modifications, new head and taillamps.

We’re also looking for a high-output LS7 engine that will also push well past the 400-hp mark.

The NY show will be a big one for Chevy’s parent, General Motors, with the new 2014 Cadillac CTS, Buick LaCrosse and Buick Regal models also making their first appearances in the Big Apple.
