They have made some improvements but they have a long way to go. Audi isn't all that much different in design issues but their build quality is a little better due to the higher cost and lower production volume of their models. VW Group is still suffering from the "Lopez bean counting mentality" that resulted in vendor suppliers being pushed to the financial breaking point and the resulting products they delivered. VW in particular has struggled with product design and build quality for decades. They have made some improvements but they have a long way to go.
